not knowing how many passes were on it, I would have pulled it apart and checked it out.

Hell, I just bought a 540 from a friend that only had 20 passes on it and the first thing I did was pull it apart to make sure everything inside was good.

Inside a motor shit happens, you cant see it unless you look for it, or wait till it shows itself outside the motor.

They dont have to be used for that to happen.
i know of several reputable engine builder that have lost new engines warming then up on the dyno, even before they got to the power pulls. parts fail all the time. Your friend should have at least pulled the pan and inspected evrything while it was out.

X2, if the distributor broke and the cam gears went, sounds like the oil pump might have locked up. Course it's hard to say with that much carnage.

Always bad when you lose your hard earned money.
I hope for $3500 he didn't expect a P/S engine.
A complete motor for $3500 sounds awfully cheap.

WOW! Not like everything I build is a big HP race engine, but in over a dozen years I have NEVER "lost" an engine warming it up on the dyno, matter of fact, one serious problem in that many years.. A friend of mine who had worked for a cup team for years, said wait till you get the dyno, it will exploit your weaknesses, well when it comes to them staying together or not, guess we don't have to many weaknesses.. :-D

Unfortunately, I have fixed countless engines after someone THOUGHT they got a good deal on a used engine, this is pretty common place.. In many cases people are just unloading a bunch of used up junk.. The piece of the rod in that engine looks like nothing more then a cheap entry level rod..
