Asbestos was removed from the sealing ring compounds of the booster rockets. The new compound got brittle and shattered under stress when temperatures fell below freezing.

Freon was used for spraying the insulation foam on the main engine fuel tank. When the freon hoax was perpetrated on the US public it also was banned from use on the main tank. Before it's ban the shuttle took an average of 11 hits per launch from foam chipping. After it's ban it went to 300 hits on average.

I know.. It's been common knowledge among the people who work on the Shuttles. My cousin Dana worked for Morton-Thikol and stacked the sections. They knew the putty was shit on the first stack they put together after then ban.

They do.. But the putty shields the o-rings from the heat of the rocket motor.

Well I'm not entirely correct. There are 2 o-rings inner and outer. The inner also used the putty that is forced into the groove of the tang and clevis joints by the pressure of the solid rocket motor which forced the O-Ring into its seat.
