82 Chevrolet 3/4 ton truck with a TH-400 trans. It suddenly began making a grinding/whirring noise in only first and reverse. Second and third are absolutely quiet. What might have happened? Sprag, broken or ejected snap ring, broken snap ring land in case, planetary, or what? I'm not a trans guy, but have rebuilt several; mostly Glides. I do have a spare TH-400 meant for a Bracket Car I'm putting together (slowly). Course I'd rather not have to go that route. I tried looking in the "search function", but I've NEVER gotten anywhere with that. Also, there's nothing in my Chilton's about this issue in the in/out-ABC/abc trans trouble shooting section. HELP! Hi Hutch, No, Absolutely NO noise until it goes into first gear or reverse gear AND the truck is in MOTION, stops when stopped. After it shifts into second/third there is NO noise. Noise in reverse as long as in MOTION, stops when stopped. I just had some differential work done; it had broken the pinion bearing cage and let a couple of sleeve bearings loose; they caused the rear to lock up/release/chatter. I thought maybe, with the lurching of the rear end locking/releasing that the driveshaft (2 piece) was thrust forward/backwards, and possibly damaged something in the trans. Truck had a TH-700R4 when new, then a TH-350, then I installed the TH-400 but had to use a longer yoke to compensate for the mismatch distance of the driveshaft; I did not shorten the long yoke. I thought maybe it bottomed out on the splines forcing the mainshaft into the trans. Make sense? I tend to overthink things; medical background and all. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Would that be pinion gear to the planetary, and not the rear end/differential Mr. Hipster? Starting to sound like I'll be swapping to my other TH-400; and it includes a re-manned torque converter, not one of the higher stall race converters I also have. Thanks. Any others have some input? OK then. How can I do a DIY, in-radiator cooler flush? I'll either swap out the trans with a spare one I have, or pull the 454/TH400 (both rebuilt) out of another truck I have, and swap them into the 82. Either way's a LOT of work for someone who's had NINE spinal surgeries and can't really roll around on the floor/ground. Thanks guys.
