No report on how many battery packs exploded in flames. It would be interesting to see some information from the power company about the load on the system and how many KWH all this folderol amounted to.

BUELLTON, Calif. -- The holiday traffic jam has been especially bad for electric car drivers.
But hey, Elon says you will be able to stream Netflix while you wait.

People were lining up at charging stations across the Central and South coast since Thursday, waiting hours to plug in their vehicles.

Although the I-5 is back open at the Grapevine, many were still taking longer routes through Highway 101 on Friday.

At the Tesla charging station in Buellton, some drivers were waiting in line for two hours, and then another one to two hours to actually charge their car.

“Both days were really terrible, the lines for charging," said Matthew Jacob, who stopped in Buellton on his way back to San Jose from Santa Barbara.

“I love Tesla, but it's the worst to drive during a holiday," said Vijay Shattha, who was heading to Mexico from San Francisco. “There's not enough super chargers for all these cars.”

Shattha says he had been waiting to plug in his vehicle since Thursday.

“Every super charger that's not on the 5 was 40 cars deep yesterday. So we finally got to this one, we started running out of charge so we had to park it here, get a hotel about 10 miles away in an Uber, come back this morning, wait in line for another hour and a half, and we're finally charging it."

Vivi Naumovski, who was on her way back to the Bay Area from L.A., was forced to reserve a last minute room with her family too.

“We were on the road for about 10 hours and decided that we were going to stay at Ventura Beach Marriott," Naumovski said, adding that after 40 years of making the same trip during the Christmas holiday, this time has been the worst.

Alison Sydney, a spokeswoman at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott (next to the charging station in Buellton), said drivers tried booking last minute rooms Thursday night too.

"We've been fully booked for the holidays, we had to turn people away," Sydney said. “We have had them line up around the hotel all morning and yesterday. We have a lot of Teslas here, we have 11 charging stations.”

As a courtesy, Tesla was providing complimentary coffee and sandwiches to drivers as they waited their turn to plug in.

“When you go to all the stations now, they are full," said Waldo Ortega, who had come in from Orange County. “What we try to do is schedule breakfast at a charge, and then lunch at a charge 'cause it takes us two charges to go from San Juan Capistrano to Mill Valley."

Ortega also had a message for Tesla CEO, Elon Musk: “Musk, do a better job.”

For Sa'ar Yanav, who was renting a Tesla, the trip's complications were unexpected.
“It's my first experience," he said. "It wasn't the greatest.”

Similarly long lines were seen at the Tesla charging stations at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.

Ahhh ........ but the weather in the Kaliphate of Phonyeieio is perfect every day.

That all sounds really fun.
I see tons of people saying 50% of vehicles will be electric in a few years.
The load on the grids would be interesting.

Gee, nobody could have possibly thought this would happen !!! LMAO !!!

This will be a normal daily occurrence, if the masses actually buy into using electric cars by the millions.

But, Elon says all will be fine.

Great. Even more idle time for those self righteous hipocrite fuckbags to sit and dream up more ways to assfuck the working people who's slave labour paid for that Tesla they are sitting in. Do you wonder how much they contemplate the horrors of genocide, torture, child slavery and the destruction of the African continent that the materials that the batteries in their vehicles and iphones cause while they sit waiting and dreaming up ways to preach how much better than they are than the rest of us?

This makes me extremely happy. LOL! They just built a new Tesla charging station at my local mall but I've yet to see any cars using it.

Electric vehicles have their place, city commutes, public trans... Anything beyond that is a pipe dream.

Swapping battery packs and all that bullshit.. Do any of you want some teenager operating a lift near your 50k plus dollar car every few hundred miles? Any other type of lift system will require crazy infrastructure because every vehicle will be different. It simply won’t work.

People need to wake up to reality.

Yes sir.

You can't beat pyhsics, the amount of energy to move a car a certain distance does not change. What changes is where the energy comes from and at what point it gets transfererd , either from gasoline inside of an internal combustion engine or fossil fuel/renewables at a generation facility and transferered at a charging station.

That shit aint "free" at any point, all the electric cars snobs are doing is squeezing the water baloon in a different spot than those who use gasoline/diesel.

Had a conversation with a millenial at work who was all excited and wanted a total electric Lexus. I asked her if she had any friends outside of DFW, and she said yeah! my family is in Houston and I have a lot of friends down there...

I then asked her about the very real possibilty of what is normally about a 3 1/2 hour trip taking all day due to having to stop and charge up either enroute or at a minimum while she was there so she could get back home. DUUUUH... I didnt think about that... reality time. :)

Told her if she wanted to save the planet and visit friends and fam in Houston from DFW, options are move closer, or maybe think about a hybrid that still has an engine when she gets stuck in the always beutiful Houston or DalASS traffic.

Meh, this isn't really an issue, If they decide to standardize the battery pack case shape. and electrical specs. With cars that can park themselves, they could make the vehicles automaticly line up to a unit under the vehicle that the battery pack drops on to, and the new recharged one gets popped back in. just like all gas vehicles have to take the same pump nozzle.
This part is easy to fix If they choose to standardize the battery and the connect, disconnect systems/connections.
The part that will be the problem is the electrical grid and the fuel to generate the electrical power.
The cost to do this will be huge, and everyone if you have an electric vehicle or not will be footing the bill for those upgrades to the grid.
A drop out, lift in battery pack will fix the sit and wait charging issue. but the grid upgrade and fueling the grid will be a big problem. telling people their electric bill will have to double to pay for the upgrade isn't going to go over very well.

I see electrics being used side by side gas and diesel powered for many decades to come.
They'll never be the be all, end all answer.

they need to focus more on hybrids .... electric is great, but they should still have some type of small gas engine to help make power for charging, and limp them along.

ya know, there are hundreds of junk yard ls's out there.... maybe someone can come up with a swap kit for a tesla

but what the fuck do i know. ill stick to my diesel pickup truck
