Went to install my new axles and disk brakes, the bearings have already been installed and the retaining plate needed to be installed before the bearings (9 inch ford) would it hurt to cut the plate in half and then bolt it on

You do not need to cut in half. Just cut out enough to be able to slide the bracket over the axle diameter. Also orient the cut so it ends up at the top. That will help with any possible lube leak. A little silicone sealer at the bottom 180 degrees might not hurt either. Sometimes the O ring seal outside the bearing can weep. And be sure you have an adequate vent or 2 so no pressure builds up.

Ok, so just match the plate that came with the axles (moser) , awesome
