My primary shop compressor just started hammering a rod and I think burnt up a cylinder--by the time I got to it to shut it down one of the cylinders was smoking like crazy.

Do I buy a new compressor or rebuild the pump?

Anyone know of a good compressor repair shop in the Metro Detroit area?

would you be able to buy just a pump head for a reasonable price?

especially if its that sized unit, with a good motor and tank.

thats a leroi compressor (look on the tag to ID it) and they stopped making them years ago, they are however a very good compressor. i have a couple two cylinders and have gotten parts for them. that pump has a pressure oiling system and replaceable rod bearings. they rarely fail unless neglected. personally i would check into the repair of that one before buying a new pump and whatever you do stay away from import junk. quincy still makes good pumps but they are very expensive. the other option would be to look for a good used machine, the three phase units can be sometimes had at a decent price.

Mine galled a pin & I was lucky enough to hear it when the comp cycled off.

I spent $80 on a piston/rod assy & gaskets.


Google Jack's small engine parts for the parts to fix it.

I've used them & they know their stuff.

quiet and dependable and all the air anyone can use!!!!

Check with a farm store or tractor supply house, I get the best pricing from that type of store on compressor parts.

I just changed the oil in it 2 weeks ago. But it has been using oil because when we drain the tank at night oil has been coming out with the water.

I gave them a call and they want 4K+ to rebuild that pump. He said its an old pump and parts are expensive. He said its a very good pump.

I have someone quoting me a Champion compressor. It has a 5 year warranty. Anyone have any experience with this brand?

Champion is for the most part is not a very reliable compressor. I don't like them. Buy you a quincy pump and bolt it onto that tank. Quincy makes a bunch of different models. QT series are a good pump for the money but if you want something that will outlast them all get a QR series. I wish you were closer to us. I repair/rebuild compressors all day every day. Everything from a 5 horse pump to a 400 horse screw.

I think I just got rid of the same compressor two days ago, give me a call tomorrow, I will hook you up with the guys I gave it to. I replaced it with a 15hp Ingersoll srcew, very, very quite the ingersoll that is, if not they can fix it for you they use to work for Metro air. ~ Jason
