doing a complete restoration on a 69 camaro. is a sealer necessary or just prime and paint?

Depends on the primer. A good sealer will prevent dye back. But if you use a good primer surface you don't have to. But it does keep the color holdout better. You*can seal with epoxy primer too.
Not mandatory, but some people would say no way. Some say hell yes. Depends on colors of your primer and color of your base also.

PLEASE use sealer!

It will give better color holdout, better adhesion, better corrosion protection, and depending on the final color
it will allow the color coat to look even and have no shadows.

I used to do high end restorations, I ALWAYS used the correct color sealer.
It made everything else look better.

What will be the final color and what paint system (DuPont, PPG, Sherwin Williams..) are you using?

I am a retired painter, 40+ years doing custom paint, resto's and collision stuff, if you have any questions
