If it were me, I would do a 20 minute heat break in cycle and let it cool down to ambient temperature before you go on a long trip right off the bat. Synthetic gear oil? GL5?

Don't use synthetic gear lube in a rear axle. use good old 90W/120W oil. I have seen way to many rear axle gear failures with newly installed ring and pinion problems while using synthetic gear lube---one after another. Sure synthetic gear lube may be "slippery" but it does NOT hold up very well to pressure. The pressure happens at the contact point of the ring to pinion contact.
