Why do Pontiac's have that trademark "carb howl" they have?

In high school, (1989) I had a buddy with a 1968 Firebird 400 4-speed, (it WAS the car to beat) and I swear you could hear the car from a mile away with that awesome carb sound. He had a Holley 650 DP BTW... Just wondering about the sound...

Somebody knew how to work on a carb. Thats all. There are people today that will work on them but they will charge an arm and a leg. It was not just Pontiacs.

I've had a few cars of different types different engines that would howl like a dog, changed the exhaust to something more free flowing and the carb sound went away.
I think alot of the noise is from the exhaust pressure not letting everything out.
