Hi all, any experience w/ these guys? I did some net research and seemed mostly positive, but I am getting ready to invest in a 4l80 conversion for my Trailblazer SS and this popped up. $$$ is about the same for a swap, about 4-5k with all the shit I want to do(alum drum, converter, conversion itself, etc). Any info good or bad is appreciated!

How much power are you making? Boosted? I have a VERY built 4L70( built by me) behind my turbo LS, raced and beat on for 3 years at 800 hp. Now Its over 1000 hp and I don't trust the trans any more.
I would say go the 4L80 route and be done. total reliability, meaning you don't have to build shit twice like me. But I would suggest doing the Sonnax overrun clutch valve upgrade. Its not a bolt on, but it addresses a known weak point of the 4L80 OD over drive sprag (roller clutch). Just my opinion.

If the money is about the same...why not go with the 4l80e for the peace of mind and the room/opportunity for growth?

Performabuilt has a good rep from all that I see. They do good work...and I think they currently have 2...maybe 3...transmissions out there at that power level. A GTO is their most well known...and I think a corvette or two.
Those weigh alot less than a tbss...and they get driven differently than a tbss usually is.
A 4l60e becomes a liability and MAX EFFORT at that power level. If this is something that's going to get street driven...do you want to be at max effort all the time?

Thank guys, I appreciate the responses. I am planning on about 1000whp when the build is done. Right now I am about 420whp or so and will be about 500-550whp with new heads/intake/cam. Boost to come later, but it will come. I just like to do things once, at least I try to.

Richard, would it be ok if I called you? I have been thinking about building the 4l80 myself w/ alum drum and other goodies. If you don't mind, would like to get your opinions on some upgrades. FYI, I think I am going to stay the course and go 4L80. I like stuff bulletproof, I daily drive hard and do stupid stuff like random burnouts and bounce off the limiter. Thanks again!

I would never consider a 4L70 at the level you are planning for.
Get a good builder and get a 4L80 built for your application. I cant stress this enough but your builder needs to have very good knowledge of the 4L80. 1000 whp at your vehicle weight will take more than the average trans guy can handle.
