There have a been a couple of commercial flights out of Toronto recently that had military escorts back to the airport. One was down around SC, when it was turned back, and the other somewhere around Ohio, IIRC.

First question - if there is concern about a flight being a threat, why do they bring it back to the originating airport? In the case where the plane was down around SC, that's pretty far from Toronto, and it seems a lot of bad things could happen along the way.

Second question - if the flight is determined to be a risk, how do they determine when to take it down? Again, using the flight above, there are an awful lot of places you wouldn't want it coming down in pieces.

Third question - if they believe there is a flight risk, why not head the aircraft out over the ocean, and then up the coast, away from populated areas?

Good question. The only one I remember them ever talking about shooting down was Payne Stewart's plane that was on autopilot and everyone was dead. They were worried it would come down in a populated area. I don't know how they would make a decision on civilian plane loads of people.

It's just my .02. But I still feel the the somerset plane was shot down by our gov't to save the lives of many on 9/11. Don't get me wrong the people on that plane are all heroes. And always will be. I'm not take'n anything from them.

if it's a hijack, turning around won't be an option, drunken passengers should go back to where they came from.

Agreed completely, I have a customer who works deep in US/China relations government work who told me after 10 years that info was declassified but not made well known. It is a fact, well, or so I was told by a credible source.

That most recent flight that went back to Toronto had the drunken women fighting and smoking in the bathroom I think. It was bound for Cuba, so normally, they'll head back to country of origin because some passengers may not be visa'ed for the United States and would create even more headaches than hoofing it back home. I'm not sure why they needed a fighter escort, though.

It was these two turn backs that have me wondering what the procedure is. I'd be very surprised if a known threat would just be escorted back, but how do they ascertain the threat level, what needs to be done, and when?
