^^I don't follow Nikon models, and frankly, with the last of my two old 40D Canon, and a pair of 7D bodies, I'll probably never buy anything "better." For "the lightweight" and size, I bought a Canon refurb SL-1. THERE ARE differences in some bodies, most notably in my "stuff," the focus accuracy AND SPEED is much worse with the little SL-1, than either the 40D or 7D.

Also "handy" in my 7D is the ability to microfocus a lens in the menu, and then it remembers that lens setting for that lens. EG I bought a 400mm /f2.8 at a hell of a price supposedly "broken" AF. Turns out yes, it is technically, but the microfocus adjustment "fixed it." "Little things" like this make a difference.

I will likely never own a full frame

If we stay with Nikon we will be picking up a brand new D5 and D500 this year, unless a D5s is announced. If we move to Canon, we will get a 1DX MkII and a 5dxMkIV for starters.
