New converter broke

I just bought a new converter, built specifically for my setup, I gave the builder all my info, engine, trans, gear gear, weight, tire, power, cam specs, compression, I mean everything. I used the converter for the first time this weekend in Joliet, and broke it on the 5th pass.

I went back to the builder and we cut it apart, the stator was broken in about 15 pieces and the sprag was cracked but still together. Basically nothing is useable

He says i need a steel stator, and that i must be making more power than i told him. I told him it makes 800hp on nitrous

390 cu in 23* sbc
1 plate system (progressive)
3200lb
th 350 trans
4.11 rear
radial tires

It pulled 1.36 60fts and runs 140mph in the 1/4

Do i need a steel stator? how fast r u guys going on aluminum stators? Am i entitled to a new converter for no charge?

Yes and absolutely!!!
what he said ^^^^^^
If you gave the manufacturer accurate information which you did and the converter you were sold was what was recommended for that application and it broke then yes I would think you should at least get a new converter. Unfortunately the trans is a mess and you will have to pick up the tab for that.

Now would also be a good time to consider changing your transmission to a PG or TH400. At the 800hp level, that TH350 is gonna be a high maintenance item if you race very often. Some have had good luck at that level with the TH350....but most don't.
The sprag in the converter stattor is not doing you any good. Most likely it's what caused the alumnium stator to fail. And yeah, I would be expecting a fresh converter out of the deal, based on your comments.

The situation started when i sent him my old converter to see if it could be tightened, he cut it apart and found a broken thrust bearing race. He said that the converter is an old technology unit, and that he could build me much nicer piece. So i gave hime ALL my info on the car, told him my expectations, ET and mph wise.

Two days later he calls me with 3 converter options, 2 with aluminum stators, 1 with the steel stator. He said that all 3 would work well for my app, but he did advise that he wouldnt run the aluminum stators for 5 seasons, (basically he's just wanting to make sure its holding up, etc, which im fine with) The converter made it through 2 motor only passes, 1 small shot, and one shot at the power level I informed him i would be running, then it broke on the next pass.

After we cut it apart and he tells me im making more power than I told him (which its not) I offer to pay the difference in price for the steel stator ($500 upgrade). He informs me that wont be happening, and that the converter failure is my fault.

Im going to put a glide in it very soon, its a street/strip 50/50 car, Ive been draging my feet on the glide, but im pulling the trigger now.

btw the th350 trans is not broken, just needs completely disassembled to clean all the aluminum out of it.
I would think the converter builder should take care of it. If he gave you the option, that means he said it would work. The sprag is probably what took out the stator, it cracked and expanded and took out the stator. Good luck....

Chris
$500 to upgrade to a steel stator is ridiculous.
x2...you need to find a different converter guy
Damn, no good man. Hope your converter guy comes through on this one.

First tell him that you posted on YB and we all want to know who he is and if he's going to make it right. ;)
His name is Larry Barnett from American Performance Converters in Peru Indiana.

The way I see it, he could have turned a bad situation into a good one by taking care of the issue, then i would have praised him for it. Instead he choose another path, and his name/reputation is going south.

I though most every converter had a sprag? what r my options? spragless?
Well after trying to get Larry to stand behind his work, i hope he steps in front of a MAC truck, he will not make this right.

Please, do NOT buy this companys converters, or transmissions. I have been more than polite about the entire situation, and wanted the money i paid for the converter to be put toward another, and he refused.

He even went as far to say that my 390 cu in 23* sbc on a single plate made more low end power than a friend of mines 540 cu in twin 76mm turbo car and thats why his converter lived and mine broke. He will say/do anything to avoid standing behind his product.

Does anyone have any converter guys to recomend? Hutch, are you in the converter game? Remember this converter will be behind the slowest 1200hp, 1500ft lb of torque race car youve ever seen!
You can call PTC and talk with Lane. I have one of their 10" convertors - steel stator, spragless. I make over 1000 ft-lb torque and it has held up well.
Not a good situation! No win situation for either party. Maybe you should be a better person...stop the bus and pull them from under the tire and try to work things out. Don't expect to get more than you pay for!
I have used Larry's converters on several cars and truck projects and have never had any trouble with their product.

I cant help but notice you didn't post any feedback on the trucks performance. From what I have heard it picked up several tenths, any truth to that? This is a bad situation for both parties, nobody is going to be happy with the outcome.

PTC no more problems.!!!
