This is a 1967 El Camino. Everything works well during the day. But at night, when I turn on the headlights, my dash board dies. Everything inside shuts down including the fuel level gauge. Even the turn signals won't work. I know it sounds like a ground problem. But I have ground straps going from the engine to the chassis, the firewall, the fenderwells and the battery.

Is there some strap going to the dashboard housing that I am missing?

Sounds like it might be a short in the switch itself. Pull it out and have a look it might just be corroded. Pick up some contact cleaner and dilectric grease and clean it up.
Good Luck
