If your 489 has a 4.25" crank buy a new block and pistons and make it a 565. I think that would be your best bet and then when you get the money get a new set of heads and a new intake(the super vic isn't so bad though). A 565 with those heads should make 825+ and it will help with your converter issue. That's what I would do.

That or spray it harder! I went 7.60s/4.90s with a iron headed 496 at 2650 pounds.:drinkers:

really !! did not know i could go that big with this crank ...
A 4.25" crank with a 4.60 bore is a 565. However your combo should be faster then it is. It takes about 700 horse to go 138 at 3200# so something is off. Your combo on motor should make at least 650. But before you dump a bunch of money into the heads I would start on a new shortblock. Plus if you want to get new pistons to change the combo just take your rods and crank and put it into a new block.

Raise the compression, get some port work on the heads, and get the converter and rest of the drivetrain right and you can run the numbers with a 489.
Filp's Elcamino runs 5.60's with a 496.

There's no doubt the stock block 496 combo works. I make 1150-1200 with mine on spray with some old iron heads. But if your going to raise the compression chances are your going to need new pistons. And its going to cost you at least $1000 to port the heads and intake and I think the heads and intake are a little on the large side now. Insteads of spending that money on that I would put it towards a aftermarket block. When its time to upgrade try selling a stock block 496 combo. You can't give them away.

If its a race car a solid roller is the only way to go. If your gonna go to a bigger bore I would put a set of 2.30 intake valves in it if your heads don't allready have them. Then again by time you spend 3k+ on a new block, pistons, and rings maybe you should sell your short block or keep it as a spare and buy this.
