Posting for a friend, he had a built Dart block 4.125 stroke w/ Callies Dragonslayer crank/rods. 350hp NOS hit w/ ported stock LSA blower. Fresh motor, almost no time on it. Broke a Callies rod right in the middle. Will try to get pics. Thoughts? He didn't think he detonated it, but not 100% on that. Piston looked ok, but had damage from coming apart. My first thought is defect in the rod. Came apart right in the middle. Is there a better power adder rod out that's not insane $$$? 1500hp build, 7000rpm max.

Callies Ultra rods are pretty stout pieces so it's a bit unusual to have a new set fail. Where these new rods or a used set reused. there might be another issue in the engine that parted the rod besides just a bad rod. What was the boost on the engine and what size shot of nitrous?

Brand new set, whole motor was brand new except for the blower/bottle system. Will find out the boost level, had a single 350hp hit on it. Car had 5 passes on it. Chassis dyno on motor, dyno on bottle, 1 street pass on motor, 1 track pass on motor, broke on the only track pass on bottle.

That makes no sense. PLENTY of guys making way more power at same rpm with stock crap or China rods.

It makes complete sense.
A spike in cylinder pressure at a low RPM is brutal on the lower end, especially with a tight converter or a manual transmission.
The most reliable sbe builds are certainly not trying for big power at only 5k.
A blower car is making a shitload of torque at 5k, and if that's when the the nitrous comes online, it could spell trouble.

It makes no sense to YOU. You never want to put that kind of load an an engine (small block especially) underneath peak torque.

Standby guys, will post more info Mon/Tues. Thanks to all who responded. Another note, the LSA/NOS combo was proven on his previous 6.2 stock block combo and went on the new motor more/less unchanged. Motor got bigger, w/ bigger heads/cam. I do understand a low rpm NOS hit can cause the problem, but it's not like he cam out on idle with it on full hit. Rod is going to be sent back to Callies for analysis, will let you all know how it goes. In the meantime, any info good/bad on the new Wiseco Boostline rods? The only other rod I have been able to find is Carillo's for a severe duty application. Any recommendations is appreciated.

You haven't looked hard for rods then

The ultra H is still a light rod.

The HD rods out there are things like the callies enforcer, Oliver speedway, Molnar power adder plus

We'll see what happens when they get analysis. Zbrown, thanks for the rod referrals, will check them out. There are so many options out there, it's hard to keep track.

typically when a rod breaks clean in half without damaging the piston, it is from a hydrolock incident, or the rod bearing seized on the crank and twisted the beam off angle. Most rods have INSANE compressive load carrying ability.
