You could def put a 3.9 or 4.0 stroke in it with some ported 243s and run good.

iron 6l would be a starting point LSX would be my choice some 400+ ci

the GM LS3 cnc ported heads are a great deal i think they just need a upgraded spring pack (LT73925K1LUN for hydr roller up to .660 lift)

i could go on and on and on

Depends on how much $$$$ you want to chuck at it.

We will all have a different opinion. If I find time later ill make a list

im looking to put this my 68 firebird to replace my 469 pontiac engine i use this car to run 5.70 6.00 and s/st but i want to speed up with and ls motor
you really need 400+ inches, IMO.
my pump gas 408 runs 6.20's at 3300#. could easily get a couple of tenths with compression and solid cam if it was race only.
that and a lighter raceweight you could achieve 6.0 pretty easily on motor. couple hundred for nitrous to run the 5.70 stuff.
a 440 would be nice, but add the price and weight of the lsx block for reliability.

6.0 block will take what you want to do.

Ok

LS2 iron block with ARP studs
Lunati. Voodoo crank and rods.
JE pistons and rings
King bearings
Cloyes timming set
ATI balancer
I use Lunati for cams lifters and push rods they do , do some off the shelf nitour cams
GM LS3 CNC heads (from memory they flow 350 @ .650 don't quote me)
Heads would need the spring upgrade LT73925K1LUN. Hydruaic roller set up they will take .660ish lift
Rockers you choose plenty of options
Edelbrock super victor
Holley 850/950 ultra
Edelbrock nos kit keep it simple
Your normal felpro gaskets
Etc etc etc etc.

That's along the lines of what I would do.
