Line lock

So as you can tell by my screen name I have a 67 Camaro. It's a street car that I do take to the track and run on test n tune nights. Not fast by any means, high 8's in the 1/8th mile. Next yr I want to compete in the Friday night street bracket class. Should I invest the time and money for a line lock? It's an automatic car and I run drag radials. I do a first to 2nd gear burn out with the tires wet with no issues. Being a low h.p car and using drag radials it's not like I need a long Smokey burn out. Opinions? Yes I know car is slow

Thanks,

The money for the line lock itself isn't that much. However, I do suggest investing in a quality flaring tool and bender.

Definitely put one in. Find an easy to reach spot for your activation switch

.

I would also suggest you stop shifting in the water.
Do a high gear burnout.

Good luck & race safe!!

What stall convertor? What rpm do you launch at? Some guys put 2 line locks in to hold the car and launch off the button. Moving your finger is faster and more consistent than your leg.

not needed and if this is a glide car do your burnout in high, if a 3 speed start in 2nd and immediately shift to 3rd. either way keep the burnout to 4 seconds max

Thanks. It's a 50 footer but it was my first car and I still have it so I can't complain. Scratches adds character

High gear burn out? You mean go through all 3 gears? It's a th350 with a automatic valvebody

It's a automatic valvebody so I have to start in first gear

28-3200 converter. I leave at 2,000 rpm to allow a little flash in the converter.

Disregard, I thought you had a race trans.

No sir. A true street car that I take to the track. Only thing manual on this car is the brakes and roll up windows.

With that stall and launch rpm I think the 2 line lock deal would work good.
Every trans builder I have worked with (CK, Extreme & Hutch) have all told me, do not start your burnout in first gear. 2nd to 3rd. You're on a radial so it doesn't need to be a big burnout.
High 8’s. Have you skipped the burnout box? Do you have posi? Are you planning on adding power? You may not need to do a burnout. Your car may just heat up/burn the fluid if you tried to spin in high gear. Set up those Caltracs correctly and work on your suspensions weight transfer.
I have put many sets of Caltracs on and when set up right they have all hooked up well on the street on street tires. I am not saying they stop spinning but you can feel the difference. These cars were all 600 to 800 hp so yours shouldn‘t be a problem.IMO.

Hard to skip burn out box. Even if I go through at a angle 1 tire will end up wet. Yes, posi. If I could avoid water box I can almost guarantee it won't spin. I've thought about just going through water box. Come up on converter and stab it and let it spin while rolling out to the starting line.

Turbo 350 you don't want to come out of a burnout in 2nd especially if the tires bite. The 2nd gear sprag is the weakest link in those transmissions and tires biting after a burnout in 2nd will break it.

I agree with not needing a big burnout with a radial especially with the time you are running. For the group; knowing our friend can’t start in high gear for his burnout, is there any harm in holding it in 1st for a burnout and just getting what he can out of it?
