We are trying to diagnose a problem on a 1987 Buick T-type with this turbo. The car is burning oil and we are not exactly sure where it is coming from. We currently have the turbo off the car and have noticed that there is some side to side play in the turbine side of the turbo. Does anyone know what is an acceptable amount of play? It is not enough for the wheel to hit the sides but it is enough that we are concerned. There is also some oil that has passed through the gasket connecting the center section to the exhaust side of the turbo. We think this is probably where the oil is coming from. Does anyone have any suggestions on what should be the next step in diagnosing our problem?

Rear bearing sounds like it could be a little worn. When this happens the will typically either pinch or bind the piston ring on the shaft...that will cause your oil leak for sure. Give us a shout, we can help you with it, or if you need, we carry all the replacement parts of the shelf for those units.

We probably won't get around to working on the car till later in the week, but we want to try and run the engine without the turbo to see if we have oil coming from any where else. The engine got rebuilt almost 3 years ago and sat for awhile. It only has about 2000 kilometres on it since rebuild. The turbo was newly rebuilt and upgraded at the same time. If we get around to working on it later in the week what would be the best time to call your shop and who should we ask for?
