I just finished the paper work for my ccw license, and was curious how everyone carries their gun. In the small of your back, or an ankle holster? I don't want to do the whole "look at me I have a gun" thing in public. This is for the SA XD40 SC if it matters.

Just by your question I am troubled. Your gettting a "Conceled" carry license. There is no look at me I have a gun. You need to understand that no one is to see the gun. Not even showing off to your friends. In fact a good carry citizen never gives up the fact that they are carying. I make sure my wife knows I have a weapon when we go out together just so she knows what she needs to do it something happens and that's it no one else knows. Now with that out of the way having a ccw is a life changing event. If you don't think so then leave it at home. You will now have to alter the way you live, the activities you get envolved in and most certainly the clothing you wear. The gun should be carried in a location the is easy to get to (Rules out ankle) and in a location where your shirt will not ride up and accidently show the weapon (Rules out small fo back). A standard inside the belt holster is where you want to carry. You wear belts right! Get used to baggy clothes. Either a larger shirt not tucked in or pull over shirt of some type works. Good luck with your ccw. Hopefully the novelty of it all will wear off fast and you will be able to get down to the real responsibilities of carry.

I am not new to guns. I am a very avid hunter, and am very comfortable with how to handle myself and weapons. I do wear belts. Thanks for your concerns and advice. It sounds like the inside the belt holster is best. I probably won't carry full time, but I do alot of craigslist buying and selling, so that is my main concern for protection. I suspect most of the time it will be in the armrest of my car, but now I can also have it loaded while there.

Thanks for the response.

I took his post as "he doesnt want anyone to know he has a gun in public", hence the question of how people carry without giving it away. Maybe Im wrong, but thats how I read it. Either way, I carry a XD-9sc in a custom IWB kydex holster at about the 4 o'clock position. It is made where I can tuck in a shirt, and blouse it out and cover, or wear a un-tucked shirt and you never know its there. It has just a little fbi cant to it, and is easily reached.
However you carry, practice a lot on pulling from where you will wear it, it will do no good if you fumble while needing it in a shtf moment because you haven't practiced with it. Good luck.

I carry my sub compact .40 in a crossbreed Super Tuck. It is the ugliest most comfortable holster I've ever worn. Took me about 3 days to get it broke in, and now I never even know my weapon is there. I carry in about the 4 O'clock position.

Your digging a deeper hole with me LOL. Why would your gun be in the armrest? If your parked at a redlight and I pull you out of your vehicle do I get to keep your gun?
my doors autolock. Your going to have to break my window to get to me. I think I can grab it out of the arm rest almost as fast as I can pull my shirt up from under my seatbelt and get to it.

I do understand your logic, but I am not allowed to have any weapons where I work, so it stays in the car most of the time.

I love how your telling him to never tell anyone as your telling everyone on a forum that you carry, oh the irony.

WInter carry is usually a Glock 23 on owb belt holster, I use a carhart vest or quilted shirt that conceals this without being to hot when I need to go inside somewhere. Also occasionally carry sig p238 in front pocket with pocket holster or in pocket of carhart vest. I try to avoid front pocket if any other option exist's.

I try to resist picking up sig in when I know I can conceal Glock. A sub compact is easy to carry but much less useful.

I have a rule. If the gun is out of my gun safe it's on me. Period. So just as in your case I am not allowed weapons at my workplace. So I guess you now know the answer. It's stays in the safe at home. I'm going to a ball game or the mall where you are not allowed to carry. Gun stays in the safe.

I guess "belly"guns are no longer the rule for CC...gotta have at least a 3" barrel??

most shootings or self protection accurs within 7'...

so what I'm getting at, why not opt for a smaller frame that uses a pocket holster..Kramer makes a few of these and they look like a wallet carry...I have one for a S&W M642 airweight in .38 sp and for my Berretta .32 Tomcat..

hand over your wallet mister...sure no problem..

I do have conceal carry in the pant hosters from Kramer, Rosen...those are for .45's and are comfortable but do get cumbersome..

the in the pocket ones I feel for the smaller frames are more comfy...

Ohh really! So where do I carry? And what's my name? Hmmmmm.
Umm, I'm sure anyone could track a IP back to anyone but I could careless, i was just pointing out the obvious, I took his question as how do you carry, IWB/OWB yada yada, not that he was trying to be cool with it and show it off to his friends. Move along, nothing to see here, sorry to jack your thread, be safe and smart with your newly acquired responsibility.

I thought maybe you were in an open carry state, and were getting your CHL instead. But I think your question has been answered.:D

Me too.

So you'd rather leave it at home than take it in the vehicle to and from so at last you can have it for the trip there and back even if you can't take it inside? Not too smart to me. This sounds like "well damnit if I can't take it everywhere I've got to go I just won't take it at all". I will not leave my house without mine regardless of where I'm going. As far as ball games and malls go, we aren't supposed to take guns to ball games if they are on school property and malls are not off limits here unless they have a sign on the door that says guns are not allowed which I've never seen. I carry at both places, keep it to myself and will do my best to still be here to deal with the consequences of carrying where I wasn't supoposed to should the need to use a gun in such a place arise. It's always better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.

RACEME I have a crossbreed minituck for my keltec PF-9 and love it. They make the supertuck for the larger guns. I would highly recommend one of these.
