I'm going to borrow a sprayer from a friend and paint the drywall in my garage next weekend. How can I do this as cost-effectively as possible while still achieving a durable, easily to clean finish?

DON'T DO IT!!!

Just go by an 18'' or 24'' roller instead. It's faster, cleaner, no overspray and you won't waste paint.

Semi gloss or high gloss white for a bright easy to clean look.

I would be paying retail for paint, but maybe I can get a hookup from a buddy...
Is primer necessary?

If its new drywall than Yes. The board is porus and you will have to put a few extra coats of finish paint on it. If not, than no primer. Unless you are going from like dark red to white, then primer. I would roll it as well. Spray is a mess and hard to get perfect.

Yeah, it's bare drywall. Does Behr also have the best deal on primer?

I know they make primer, but not sure if its good/bad. Go to Menards and buy First Coat Primer by USG. (it's in a 1gal of 5gal bucket with a red lid)

Alright, cool.
So rolling wastes less paint but at the expense of taking longer?

Why is primer not needed on the ceiling? It's bare drywall too.

Is ceiling paint cheaper than real primer?

make sure your drywall is finished out, and sanded well, then roll it... primer than top coat interior/exterior gloss white... buy more paint and primer than you need, take what is not used back. dont go crazy on the high dollar material. just middle of the road pricing. same shit for walls and ceiling.
