In my experiences you'll need alot more than 800 HP at 3000 lbs. I'd say you better have 1000 hp or close to run that fast in an index class. You have to run the number in any weather and under any track conditions so you have to have enough to slow it down in great conditions so you got enough under poor ones.

My 582 dyno'd at an honest 1056/811 and the car has runs 8.50's at 158-159 at 3258 lbs.

Now, to be competitive at 8.50 you need to run that number in all weather conditions, to it's best to have a car that'll run low 8.4's to mid/high 8.3's and detune for conditions.

I'd say your gonna be looking at making a solid 1000 hp to run the number at 3000 lbs. 800 hp will likely only get you 8.9 to 9.0's.

.

My 3200 lb car took 1050 HP to run 8.57, but it was not the best leaving car so take that into account.
My 3000 lb car ran 9.30 with 800 HP.
My 2600 lb car ran 8.40 with 850 HP.

if i was to use that dart 363 i talked about in orig post .........with good heads using an applied nitrous plate crossbar (jeff prock) think the sbf could make enuff steam to run 8.60s ect to qualify to run in that kind of index

the 532 is a production block even tho someone did 4 bolt caps ....seems i wouldnt think it handle that much vs the 363

andy do you ever make up your mind haha, you will need around 950 to be there and competitive to be honest, the 363 will obviously need high compression and maybe some highports or better with a hit of spray to get that number good luck bud hope you can get it there

i wouldnt worry about that. its why the class exist. they aint going to bust your balls if you go a 8.45 in a 8.50 index

And what is the idea of this in an index class? Do lighter lower HP cars have a huge advantage?
