Some dude was telling me motorcycle racing guys smear it in their air box. Is it the vapors? After looking at some pictures of a couple different labels on the internet, it's supposed to be a methanol gel. So since when is the vapors of methanol worth anything?

Isn't that kinda dangerous? One kickback or carburetor cough and you've got a fire. This whole deal is new to me, and I found it to be rather interesting. Just didn't know if I was being fed bs or not. Wouldn't know.

From the article, Waltrip's team coated the inside of the intake manifold. So in that case, air/fuel charge was hitting the sterno on its way through the manifold and then to the cylinder.

"Coating the inside of a manifold with such a gel works on the same principle as one of those scented blocks you hang on the side of your lavatory bowl. Every time you flush the cistern, water runs over the block and takes some the fragrance with it. An alcohol based gel would be completely used over the course of a race and there would be nothing for scrutineers to find."

Well, what benefit would it have being above the carburetor and away from the fuel? Does it have to come in contact with the fuel?

Zero.
not enough to make a measurable difference.
Back when IHRA was running Top Stock the porn/hick/***** from Virginia was doing it, didn't do much so they just went with aluminum rod and nitrous combo.

Sterno is no different than any other fuel, LPG, natural gas, gasoline, etc. On and on. There are lab tests to determine the energy content of the fuel. You can measure that in any form you choose, whether BTU, watts, or cases of oranges per hour

To suggest that a few ounces smeared on an intake plenum will make much difference is preposterous. In fact it could actually HURT. If the engine is already "too rich" and over the top of the curve on fuel, and you add more, you won't gain a thing.

Does it provide any kind of cooling effect being as it's methanol and since there's air flowing over it when it's pasted inside of an induction tract?
