How much is an appropriate amount for a wedding gift without looking cheap or being extravagant?
It is the wife's,good friends step son. We were invited but it is way out of town and other issues prevent us from going. We barely know the bride but know the groom fairly well.
What is a marrying couple expecting these days?

I always give $200 minimum (fancy I give more). That's going as a couple though. If you're not going, I have no idea.

Find out if they are registered anywhere and what is on their registry. My favorite gift to give is a sterling silver frame, not silverplate, for their wedding photo. A decent one will set you back about $125. But if they are very young, starting out and money is tight, cash is best.

What's the bride look like and is there a possible BJ from her at the reception once she is drunk? Don't seal the envelope until these questions are answered.
