Sorry if this story is long but here goes... I spent 10 years working as a tech in a big 3 dealership. I did electrical, driveability and engine repair. The last 6 years I was wrenching, warranty labor times drastically declined. As a bonus, diagnostic time was eliminated all together. And if you have ever worked in a dealer, diagnostics is 90% of the job. So lets say the same job that used tp pay .5 diag and .3 to replace the sensor, now pays .2(12 minutes) after no diag and a labor time cut, even though you still spent 30-40 minutes repairing the vehicle. After now having a pay cut of 75%, the automaker now sends out flyers to the dealership asking you (the dealer employee) to purchase one of their vehicles. Hmmm.... So here is the deal, the big 3 control every aspect of their dealers, by telling them what "special tools" they have to purchase from them , what warranty claims they will and will not pay, labor rate and times and how the dealer is to be run, but the dealer employees do not get any incentive to purchase a car.So my question is: If you keep cutting jobs and pay, how do you expect people to buy your product? :smt017

Well.... I recently bought a honda accord BUILT HERE IN AMERICA. I plan to buy another one. Oh yeah.... it was also designed and engineered here too.... not outsourced to India.

My German owned, Mexican built Dodge truck though... is what us ignorant americans like to call an american vehicle. Same for my GMC Suburban that I owned.... also built in Mehico, and GM is trying to outsource my job to India and china..... Why should I buy their vehicle???

If they want to force me to compete on a global level, then they are going to also compete on the global level for me. And they are going to lose the battle.

I hear ya Chris. That Honda you bought is more American than anything GM sells. We build tons of Honda tooling and yes it's engineered here also. Hell Yeah Honda of Ohio.

I drive GM products because of my dad's discounts

Oklahoma is one of the plants that is closing. I have been there Maytag sent my job to Mexico. I am still looking for work that pays more than $6.50 an hour. Just what the hell is it going to take to make the TRUE Americans stand up and say we have had enough and we are taking back what is ours. Many years ago my Father said if they can't beat us in a war then they will buy us. Guess what, were on sale!
I just don't understand why we the working people don't march on Washington and make them see us,the ones that are the losers in all of this. I don't know where or who thinks "free trade" is so great. As long as all we do is talk about it, it will not change. Boycotts do work if people have the guts to do it. There are to many gutless people out there afraid to stand up for their rights. I am going to stop now because I could go on for hours about this. We only have ourselves to blame. We fought and won our independence once looks like we need to do it again.

Well a major problem is there making vehicles that people can no longer afford to buy and insure. They tried to do the employee discount which helped and the zero % which only a saint can probably get. The cost of a new vehicle has risen so much faster than the cost of a new home that if it wasn't for the cheap interest rates driving the cost of homes up since 9/11 the vehicles would be doing a really good job at catching up with the price of a small house. A house on a peice of land appreciates and a vehicle takes a hit the day you drive it home.
As far as American made goes there haven't been any completely american made vehicles for many years already and if it wasn't for the "other cars" we might still be driving around in the crap they made years ago. Let's face it the mid 70's and 80's were crap for sure. Yes they make some pretty awsome cars and trucks today on a whole but they need to get a grip on the costs. When you add up your car payment and insurance payment and they are close ormore than your mortgage/taxes/insurance payment there is an issue.

I don't want to pick on unions but they do as much harm or more than I feel they do good . CEO's and upper management are also the reason things have gotten out of control. You can't demand things to the point of failure.

I also wonder if the political " " had leave it blank in washington even care about the average working man or women. All you have to do is look at their retirement/ benifit plan and you know that there taken care of no matter what they do to us.

I have talked to allot of shop owners and many have a bad taste in their mouth because of the work that has left this country. And many have closed their doors.

I have always stated and will always feel that when it comes to money there is nobody that can screw and american better than an american and corporate america proves it with the help of our leaders in washington.

It's amazing that the guy that get's paid the most cuts out the people that make his crazy check posisble. Doesn't he get paid the big bucks to make sure this dosen't happen. Pay cuts need to happen fron the top down not the bottom up.

probably said more than i sould have

I dont think the unions are totally to blame. The problem is each year less and less people buy from the big three. Why? Because they are inferior to the offshore stuff. The offshore stuff looks better, runs better, lasts longer ,gets better gas mileage, and resale is much higher. Everytime you hear about the crash tests guess who is at the bottom? Yep, the big three. I swear that GM brings in a Japan car R&D's it(Robs & Duplicates) and brings it out a couple years later, therefore they are always years behind. There is no more father to son loyalty, these new kids want the best. The worst is yet to come. :(

Back before the late 90's the big 3 were only testing parts to last 3 years 36,000 miles before failure. Now the parts are tested to 75,000 miles to keep up with our competition. Like other things it was too late to do this as the train already left the station. That's OK though as Japan is seeing this same kind of stuff while China charges ahead with the machine tool world. Yes China machine tools suck right now as did the Japan crap way back when.. But guess what? It wont last long before they build top notch machine tools as Japan does today.

Union workers only count for 7% of the sticker price of a car from GM.. Why not worry about the other 93%?? So that means they can hire free labor and a $30,000 car will still cost $27,900!! Not much of a savings eh?

Thank you Monty!! And to you guys who bought a Honda, my questions is: WHERE DID THE MONEY GO THAT YOU SPENT ON IT? Goes to Japan before it goes back to the workers in Ohio.

The Dodge you just bought that was built in Mexico? Money went back to the U.S.
