Usually, you'd run tubing horizontal all the way around, on the same plain, keep your helmet in. If you add another vertical bar, it will probably look kind of funny. I think spec only calls for 3/4" x .049 for the bars that contain the helmet, but you could use anything bigger than that if youd like.
