Hey guys I have a few questions I was hoping you may be able to help me out with. Ive got a 91 Mustang street/strip car I am wanting to upgrade from the stock alternator to a 130amp 3g. Is there anything special I should do to make this work properly?

I also want to move the battery to the hatch area and read another post saying 1/0 welding cable is recommended. Would that work for me also? Will I need to run a ground all the way to the block or can I use a grounding point on the chassis in the rear near the battery?

And last do you guys recommend upgrading the wiring from the starter relay to the starter or is factory wiring sufficient?

Why so big an alternator? What do you use this car for? Does it ever go to the dragstrip?

Yes it goes to the drag strip. 130amp alternator in the fox bodies is a very common swap. I will be running elec fans, water pump, fuel pump etc...on those cars the stock alt is insufficient when the car is stock.

Huge upgrade and highly recommended. The 130amp 3G has a great at idle charge. The 2G you have now is prone to fires.

You have two plugs currently. The one with the two large black/orange strip wires get cut out of the plug. I am not positive how they went, in some cases I think one went ot the solenoid and another went to the fuse panel. Check your wiring diagrams and see, if they do that, you can just attach them together with a but splice, and insulate well.

The small white wire in the large plug needs to get attached to a small grey plug that goes in the side of the 3G. You will have ot buy this seperately, or if you are shopping local a lot of times they will throw this in for you.

The 1/0 from the alternator to the battery will be great. If at first you want to use a chassis ground you can. Just set aside some money in case you get noise, and if so you can add a 1/0 ground cable from the two points.

For the starter, you have a pmgr starter (solenoid on top of it) correct? If so you should be fine with the 4ga cable.

you didn't indicate if it was a strip only car or just 'goes to the track a couple times a year'.
Strip only car, just install two batteries and save the parasitic drag on the engine.
Nobody is touching this because it's more complicated than you are asking.
If you go to the track and you move the battery to the back, you have to install a remote disconnect. Also, since it is a hatch, the bulkhead you have to have is complicated. If it is a notch, it's a little easier. You have to figure out all the loads and size all the wire appropriately. 1ga is plenty, I'm sure. Unless you have dual Spal fans (them suckas draw some amps!) I would imagine the wiring from the solenoid to the starter is sufficient.
Welding cable is the cheapest way to go. Stay away from the Summit/Jegs battery relocation kits. The wire at a welding store is far superior.
I ground to the chassis (roll bar) if possible and then run a good ground strap to the engine if it is mounted on rubber/poly mounts.

Ok it is a street/strip car. Juat a 600hp 408sbf nothing exotic. I dont have the battery in the hatch yet but I do plan on it. I will buy an NHRA approved box for that when the time comes. The engine is on solid mounts so does that mean I should not ground to it? I don't know for sure what a pmgr starter is, but yes there is a solenoid on top of the starter.

Im sorry if this questions is more complex than I anticipated. If there is any details I can give to help let me know. I really appreciate the info you guys are giving me.
