In 1966 Ford showed up at LeMans with 8 new GT40 Mk IIs. Cars 1-3 entered by Shelby Racing, cars 4-6 entered by Holman Moody Racing, and cars 7 and 8 entered by Alan Mann Racing. The race played out every bit as well as Ford could have hoped: Cars 1, 2 and 5 were in the top 3 positions, with 1 and 2 on the same lap.
I had to grin especially with respect to BBF612 stating that they used 427 NASCAR engines. They in fact used FORD 427 LeMans motors. I own a NOS FORD 427 LeMans shortblock assembly. Mine is a side-oiler 'P' block, has the $ forged crank, LeMans rods w/tapered wrist pins and of course pop-up forged pistons.
Very interesting to see documentation of the "actual" RPM range of the FORD 427 LeMans motors. The synthesized on dyno video states 2,600 to 6,000 RPM at 1:43 on the video. This makes a lot of sense in that it was a flat tappet cam and 4V-dual plane medium riser with matching medium riser heads. I will say that 2,600 rpm in a similar 427FE mill, is torque that will hurt your neck. While the mill will safely churn well past 6,000, logic says it's past the peak horsepower.
Sure the rods, crank and pistons will handle 7,000+ all day on a drag strip but not using the torque of a 427 on a road race course is a sin.
I have to add that I just checked the local theater and the 8:30 showing is sold out all two-hundred or so of the seats in it. Our big-screen is likely as big as they have in that tiny space.
A few years back we did the River City Poker Run. Docked beside us was a magnificent 40ft+ cat with air-brushed hull PURE PLATINUM down the sides you know as in Strip Clubs. Not a single lady to be seen about the boat. I'm thinking and tell my Ms. when you are up to your neck in crazy naked women seven days/nights a week --- when you go out in the hot boat for a fast as fuck poker run, you don't even want to look at half naked women
They need to make one about some flaming gay guy that has been tortured his whole life because of it but comes out on top to be the champ in drag racing with a big bad butch of a woman as a crew chief and the rest of the crew transitioning.
Probably go over and make big bucks and change the cultural view of racing in general by the masses........bringing on change to the whole of society.

In the book Go like Hell. Which the movie is based they ask shelby if he had any regrets in life. His only regret he said was complying with Ford and asking Ken to drop back his position and thus forfeited 1st place. He was killed in a race not long after that. Not sure if movie depicts ken had to pit because the guy who helped him into car closed the door early catch his helmet and bending door. When he hit 200mph the door was trying to fly off. They had to pit for 15min to straighten door. After fixed i think Ken made it back to 1st before 1/2 way. Very talented driver. Shelby said Ken normally wouldn't listen to them on radio. He did his own thing, he still not sure why Ken listened to him to drop back to allow the 123 win.
Ford didn't intentionally fuck Ken over like the movie showed. No one knew that they were including the distance from the actual starting space the cars left from. They figured it was from the start/finish line. Also Ken wasn't the "hard to get along with guy" like in the movie.
overall, it was made pretty well and pretty accurate...for Hollywood. They started by showing the Mark I and progressed to the Mark IV at the end which was decently impressive.
Having a dam good idea of FORD racing/industrial and marine power plant distribution. I seriously wonder who 'built' the motors for SHELBY. Holman Moody was like Meca for FORD Racing Engines.
The Lehigh Valley Shelby club had a gathering at the Mahoning Valley Cinema in Lehighton today for the movie. Ford GT's , Ferrari's, Mustangs and Vipers showed up.
If you listen to the Carrol Shelby interview he states exactly what happened with the Ken Miles incident. In his own words he says Ford wanted a flying all Ford finish. (Which I have seen many times on a road course by the way)
The sanctioning body decided to fuck with Ford because in Shelby’s own words they were not at all happy to see an American manufacturer win LeMans. (Dang!, some things never change)
They invented a rule that stated the second place car won because he traveled a longer distance having started farther down in the starting order.
This can’t be put on Ford trying to fuck Ken Miles our of a win. What would be the motive for that anyways?
That video was given to me a couple years ago on DVD - converted from VHS. The guy who gave it to me was a long retired Ford dyno technician, who wanted me to post it on YouTube - which I did. He did not want to be identified. I have never seen him before or since.
A few months ago I got a call from the Archive department at Ford Motor Company regarding the video. I thought they wanted the video taken down, but they actually wanted a good copy - which I provided - because they did not have that particular video in the own archives. I received a very nice letter from them, which I would turn over to the dyno guy if I had a way to find him again.

Henry in the book shelby talks about ford brass wanting miles to drop back so the other cars would all qualify. I beleive there was a Porsche in 4th. So the way the time ended up if miles didn't drop back one car would have got 4th. They convinced miles that he would still get first even if he dropped back. But do to that rule he didn't. He got 2nd. Shelby said he regretted asking Ken to drop for the sake of Ford after all they still would have had 1-2&4.
