Im in a couple debates right now with some friends of mine and we are coming to YB for a possible answer.
Two different engines same question...
As always, how much HP do you think it will make...

first up-
394" SBC, 3.8750 arm, 4.040 bore. 12.5:1, dart 230cc CNC'd heads. cam is .259/.267, .681/.681...A victor sr. CNC'd intake will sit on top with a quick fuel 950 carb....

Second-
505" BBC, 4.250 stroke, 4.350 bore, 12:1, edelbrock Victor 370cc heads, ported and polished, victor sr 4500 intake port matched. cam is in the 720's lift and high .260s duration @50.......

Both engines will have 38* run on 110
(at least for the sake of this discussion)
Any other questions please ask....

My guess is 550 to 575 for the small block and 650 to 700 with the big block.

What's the margin for error?

The small block could go 630 HP/550 TQ. Big block looks like a 760 HP/690 TQ piece to me.

With the limiting factors for more power being what?
I think the combination of compression, cam, and cubes are not right to make more hp on a average build. Sure some people make more with less.

The 505 has more potential without a doubt.

cyl heads are way too big on 505 imho, my old 505 had 320's probably make 700-ish, and small block probably-650-675.my 02.
You think the big block will only make 25 to 50 more over the small block?

No wonder footbraker pics on you.;)

Small block would make 600 to 625 and the big block will be a lazzy turd with that small stick and big head. Put some camshaft in it and rev the peewaaa out of it and it will make 780 to 800. All on a DTS dyno with a good tune up. IMHO

Have fun with them Steve.;)

Around 620-640 for the 394
Around 740-760 for the 505
