I have been offered a job in Eldorado AR and wanted to know a little about the area. Cost of living, any good race tracks close?

This might be my chance to come play on the 1/8 mile with some of you all

Have you ever been to El Dorado , Ark ?

Pine trees, lots and lots of PINE trees

I think Shreveport re-opened the drag strip there, which would be about 100 miles away

Shreveport / Bossier City has multiple casinos, not indian ones

You will have to learn to enjoy High School /college football
and , hunting to fit in

I don't know what kind of wage you are offered but its not a high wage area .

Proposed new freeway to go north / south about right there don't think its been started yet

They do get some severe weather there , rains a lot in the winter most years

Lots of chicken feathers in the ditches :p

Its not an awful area , It will be much different than Phx !

I live in Monroe La which is about 60 miles south. We have a track here in monroe, www.twincitymotorsportspark.com. They race every other weekend. Payout is good, 2000 guranteed in superpro for 85 dollar entry. 1/8 mile for super pro and no-e. 1/4 for bikes and street. Friday night test and tune is 1/4 for all and they run a gamblers race on friday 100 entry pays back 80%. Not much in eldorado but if you like peace and quiet, lots of pine trees and woods you are good to go. Little rock is not far away, Monroe is close and Shreveport/Bossier is close also. Good fishing close by. Hot and humid down here in the summer but winters are pretty mild. Hot Springs isn't far either and a very nice place to visit with some pretty lakes.

I lived in Camden Arkansas, about 30 Mi North, and my wife is from El Dorado.

El Dorado is around 20K people, but there's nothing around there, It's not like being in a suburb. If you like shopping, and eating at big chain restaurants, it's not the place for you. The public schools in S. AR towns aren't the best, but you can do as well as anywhere else if you want to learn.

If you hunt, fish, this is a great location. The larger employers in that area are chemical/paper/petroleum related.

Prescott raceway is probably the closest race track (60-70Mi), followed by Twin City at Monroe (90-100 mi), and then Shreveport (~120? mi)

Realize that I haven't lived there since the late 80's/early 90's, just visited--Family has deer camp hunting land in southwest AR, so I visit pretty regularly. Neither me nor my wife has been just really interested in being back there. It's not bad, it's just rural, and we like our stores, restaurants, technology, etc.

PM me if you want to know anything else.

Prescott has a good 1000' track. The one north of Shreveport in Gillam is back open I think, I saw quite a few cars and bikes heading that way a couple of weekends ago.

I THINK there some deal where if your kid go to school and graduates for Eldorado an oil company will pay for college. I know I seen it on the news a year or two ago.

Forgot about this. Murphy Oil (the one that sells at Wal Mart) is based in El Dorado. If you graduate High School there, Murphy Oil provides graduates of El Dorado High School a tuition scholarship that can be used at any accredited Arkansas public university or community college, or any accredited private or out-of-state university. www.eldoradopromise.com.

what is it with Arkanas these days, I thought the whole state was repressed
Sounds like you'd fit right in. Who's repressing Arkansas (Arkanas^^) "these days"?

I live in El Dorado. Not a bad place to live by no means, we have our problems like every other town. El Dorado just built a NICE high school and this year is it's first year of having students. Murphy Oil's "El Dorado Promise" is great if you have kids. Lots of Local Business's and most places you go the people are nice. Union County just got a new Sheriff so he's been cracking down on some of the things that could possibly make this town not as pleasant as it should be. LOTS AND LOTS of Oil around here (many people have made a good living from this). Most people that live on the outskirts of town work in the oil fields (I do). Feel free to PM me and I can give you any specific info you may want.

Monroe LA is roughly an hour away
Shreveport LA 2 hours
Little Rock AR 2 hours
Prescott Raceway 45 minutes

Its actually kind of nice being in the center of these towns. All of them have their pro/con's so you just pick what ya want to do that day and you'll be there in a couple hours. If ya don't mind me asking, what company offered you a Job?

I do a lot of business with a cable manufacturer in El Dorado. Been there a few times. Nice town and people, looks like its pretty poor as well. I would guess that the fishing and hunting is pretty good.
