This has been done since the early seventy's (to my knowlege) right here in the good ole USA.
My brother took me to a machine shop in Connecticut where they were doing machine work for NASA, drilling square holes, among other operations.

Not even close to new technology. Just leaves a tiny radius in the corners. Not really that much loading on the machine. More of a light vibration. Never heard of machine damage caused from it. This stuff is saved for high dollar machining. Even if it did damage the machine they would put it into the cost of the parts and just buy another machine when needed.
