Gonna order pistons in a week, need to know if its really necessary to go .030 and dish money for the boring? Just a 351w and trick flow 190 heads.
In my opinion, only if it has lots of ring groove. If the block has lots of miles on it then it's necessary for proper ring seal. Sometimes .010 and .020 pistons are available. Only do enough to clean up the bore. Don't take out extra material if you don't have to.

That's usually just the first size over stock for a lot of engines. Newer stuff like the ls1 have offerings at .005 over. Enough to clean it up is all you need. If it cleans up at 10 over and you can get pistons, do it that way.

Miles are unknown on the block, the pistons I want only come .030 or bigger trying to do This build on somewhat of a budget. What would just line honing do? With moly ring

Take it to a machine shop and have them bore gauge it. It is not the fact that it will be .030" over that will make more power, it is the fact that the piston is fitted correctly, the bore is straight and the cylinder finish is right that will make the difference. Line honing is for the mains.
