I've got a 5.13 geared Dana 60 with a full spool. I'm replacing the gears with a set of 4.10s that are pro gears. I wanted to know if my spool that is for 4.56s and up (4 series?) will work with these gears. Summit racing calls out the pro gear series 4.10s as for a 4 series carrier. Anyone know for certain?

The 4.10 will not fit the spool you have. That spool is made to start with 4.56's..The 4.10's use the spool designed for 3.07-4.10.

I'm thinking the same thing, but on the summit site they have 4.10 pro gears listed as 4 series. Isn't the 3.07-4.10 carrier 3 series, and the 4.56 and up one 4 series?

For the 12 bolt yes. I know the 12 bolts use 3.90 and up in their "4 series" carriers, and make a 3.73 gear with a thicker ring gear to fit it. Anything less goes on a "3 series" carrier. But with the Dana 60, you have two options, which are listed above. I don't think they actually label it as a 3 and 4 series type carrier. Articles and catalogs can have typos and I wouldn't trust what they say 100%. If you are in doubt, call the gear company and ask them if they actually do make a 4.10 Pro gear and if the 4.10 pro gear fits the bigger carrier. The catalogs I looked in don't show a 4.10 pro gear for it but again I DON'T rely on catalogs 100%. Let us know what they say.

From the Mark Williams Enterprises site I found this paragraph about 'pro gears'
"All gears are for 4 series Spools. Will not fit 3 series O. E. carriers. Applications: '66-'73 Dodge and Chrysler w/Hemi, various '67-'89 3/4 ton trucks. 9 3/4" Ring gear, 1.626" Diameter Pinion Stem, 29 spline pinion"
It's just a vague area being that 4.10s are almost always for the smaller size carrier.

"Category: Ring & Pinion SetsPart Number(s): 9310 Dana 60 All gears are for 4 series Spools. Will not fit 3 series O. E. carriers. Applications: '66-'73 Dodge and Chrysler w/Hemi, various '67-'89 3/4 ton trucks. 9 3/4" Ring gear, 1.626" Diameter Pinion Stem, 29 spline pinion. Manufactured from 9310 alloy, these gears are used for ultra high horsepower drag racing applications. the 9310 alloy is designed to withstand high impact loads. A special pinion support and/or coupler are required. Not For Street Use."
This was on the next page, and I'm wondering what they mean about a special pinion support?

Hmmm. Well I will say any of the catalogs I did look at, show a gears and what carrier they are made for. The 4.10 gear is made for the smaller spool that fits 3.07 -4.10 gears. I do not see any footnote or asterisk that says they offer a 4.10 for the bigger spool that usually fits 4.56 and up gears. My advice to you, since you already have the bigger spool with 5.13 gears, and you don't want to buy the smaller spool and you HAVE to run a 4.10, is to run a 4.56 gear and use a 29.5" or 30" tire. That will knock the 4.56 gear down to a 4.10 instead of the 4.10 with a 28" tire.

I've got 14 x 32s. I've got the 4.10 gears already or I'd buy 4.56s. I'm E-mailing a couple of suppliers to see what's up. I can always run 1/8th mile until I get it straight. Thanks for the quick replies.

I'm confused, how is that possible? I was under the impression that the 4 series spool only worked/fit with the higher gear ratios, like 4.56 and up.

The only set I found that seem to fit are the pro gears, and I'm questioning that.

Nope, they make a set that fits the 4 series carrier. Factory Dana 4.10 gear sets will not fit the 4 series carrier. I can be confusing. You can also machine the spool a bit to accept either series gears.

So then they DO make two different sets ofthe 4.10 to be compatable with either one because that is the gear that is the cut off..Just like a 12 bolt does for the 3.73. They make two different sets, one with a thicker ring gear to run on the 4 series carrier, but normally a 4 series carrier starts with 4.10....See that, I kind of figured they would but didn't wanna assume as I didn't see it listed..see why I don't trust catalogs. lol. Good lookin out Pro..

I got the 4.10 pro gears here from fastet. As long as they're "pro gears" I think I'm all set.
