A tale of caution for those who are considering buying cylinder heads from RFD. First, I'd like to start off by saying
I chose these heads for my 565, It was my decision alone and were not recommended to me. I chose them based off of positive (but old) reviews.
I contacted RFD/Dan back in December 2020 and ordered The 24-B heads and T&D shaft rockers for the 565 I'm had built. I was told that he could get the heads out in January.
January comes around and I ask him to see how everything is going with the heads, and I get told that they'd ship out the following week I called him. Not a big deal to me, I wasn't in a rush.
However, this went on for a couple months of hearing him say "next week", but in April 2021, I received an email from him saying the castings for my heads had core shift, and he needed to order new ones in order to give me a good product. Why in the hell did he tell me you were going to ship my heads out week after week but now I'm being delayed to do a bad batch of castings?
Mid-May rolls around and I call once again. His secretary or whoever answers the phone and I tell her I want to know what's going on with my heads. She places me on hold for a couple minutes then tells me that Dan is having them being worked on right now and they are shipping that Friday. I pay the rest of the money for the heads, as well as give them the address to ship them to.
Early July comes, and I contact Straub and he says he never received the heads and rockers. At this point, I'm pissed. I call RFD again, the secretary answers, and I ask her where the hell my heads are, I was told they were shipping out in May. That's when I get told there was a miscommunication on where they needed to be shipped and that they would send them out tomorrow. How in the hell was there a miscommunication when I gave you the address myself? And why did it take me calling 6 weeks later for you to fix the "miscommunication"?
When Straub received the heads, I asked if the rockers were in the box with them, and I was told they weren't. Now I'm even more pissed than I was before. I call RFD again and I ask where they are. The secretary there told me that they were shipped to the wrong person and UPS is going to get them to my builder. Once again, how was a mistake like this made?
Dan sends me a tracking number via email, but it said the shipping label was created on the 7th and there was no tracking information on it. The rockers eventually made it to my builder after I kept calling to find out what was going on.
I'd also like to add, that in between the points of time that I was in contact with Dan/RFD, I would call for almost 2 weeks straight without them answering their phone, and even getting an email back was difficult. They didn't seem to have an issue replying via Facebook though.
Not only did I have terrible service from RFD, but I had received calls from Straub regarding the heads, and they were a mess. The springs weren't prepped for the retainers, the spring pressure was way off for my cam, the valves had to be cleaned up, and the valve seats (If I remember correctly) were out of concentricity. There were also other clearance issue in the heads, and I was told that had I not had them inspected and had them fixed (which cost about $600), I could have had bad engine damage. Thankfully, there weren't boat anchors, but I was told that they do flow the air they advertised.
