Re: cylinder head porn ?

This is a new port/chamber we did at Kuntz...They now have new castings with plenty of material. Ill see if jim wants me to post up some numbers.

Curtis have you already recieved a LSR head..im still waiting on mine. Have a new GV2 port/chamber thats done as well just needs to be digitized/cnc'd with some new castings.

Re: cylinder head porn ?

So what's the best head as far as tune-ability ( is that even a word) for BB chevy/nitrous combo. Seems like the 23 deg stuff is much more forgiving and i've heard alot of people say the 18 deg stuff loves nitrous makes more power and still retains the forgiving nature of the 23 deg stuff. I've also been told that the 12 deg heads have a very narrow tuning window and aren't most people's first choice for a nitrous combo. I'm thinking 540-632ci. Any thoughts?

Right up my ally, . . ..

current 23 / 24 stuff has gotten very good, .. some with flow levels,
( yes I know flow isn't everything ) as good as most 18* big chiefs, ..

Both the 24* and the 18* stuff have a wider tune window, ..
But if I'm building an ALL OUT / Heads up deal with two or more foggers, ..
I'd purpose build 14* , .. or a VERY good 18* if a wider tune window is needed, ..

If there's a conventional head rule or weight break, .. or stable valve train
and saving around $1500 over the all out big chief stuff, .. then by all means a top effort 24*.

I think any chamber / valve angle under 14* for a NOS engine is trouble.

Interesting Curtis. Can you explain why. I figure always a better head with less valve angle BUT more attention needed in chamber design and export size for nitrous. Would like to here your thoughts on this.

Simple, ..

the smaller the chamber and the faster the chamber burn, the more
difficult it is to tune on NOS, .. tune up window gets very narrow
with fast burn chambers.

There's "crutches" for shallow valve angle heads, ..
but notice all the really fast NOS pro mods, .. 5", 5.2" and 5.3" bore space are all 16* valve angle heads.

I build a fairly kick ass 5" bore space head on the Sonny's casting, ..
at first it was a 13* head but it didn't really run untill we backed the
valve angle off to 16*.

Of course this depends on the amount of NOS too, .. a 200 shot it doesn't
make much difference, .. however, .. 3 stages, a punisher, .. so much it
comes out the drivers window and looks like a Cheech & Chong movie, .. you need to pay attention to the chamber.

Question for your Curtis, do supercharger charged applications have a valve angle preference other than for the chamber volume issue for lower compression?.

Thanx Curtis, I was hoping You would chime in. Are you saying that the 23-24deg stuff has a more stable valve train than the 14-18deg stuff?

What about all the fast SBF's with the canted valve stuff? They have valve angles in the 8.5 to 10 degree area.

X2

Wonder if they had a 13-15* SBF head if it wouldn't have wider tuning window and not loose any power?

So what your saying is if you can controll the burn rate with chamber or piston design a 13* would be better then 16*?

Again this is more of a chamber and ex-port problem with heavy nitrous rather then a valve angle problem. no?? or is there more.

Re: cylinder head porn ?

There are tricks to slow down the charge sometimes you have to run what you got!!!
Sometimes paying for the tricks can cost more in the long run, but I agree you have to work in the buyers window, thats the tune window a builder works in, the shallower the worse it is there too.

Re: cylinder head porn ?

Great thread! Anybody have any pics of the Edelbrock Big Victor spread port heads that they can post. How are the CNC ones out of box? Any other info you guys are willing to share on these heads would be much appreciated as well. The application is a 565 that won't see more than 7500 RPM and will take a 400 shot.
