Converter Clearance

New PG tranny with a PTC bolt together converter. I know the conventional instructions are to set the clearance between 1/8" and 3/16". Is it better to shim it closer to 1/8" which gives better converter pump drive engagement?

I like 1/8" the best. Pump engagement is a good part of it.

I contemplated this as well and ended up splitting the difference...Torque Converter Spacers - .150 6pk

When I checked the clearance on my new transmission/converter it's just over .172" (3/16 = .1875") without any shims. My transmission guy wanted me to tighten it closer to .125". but It's tough to find shims with 1" OD in thicknesses less than .062". I have some .015" that I can stack though it's a pain to try and fit in and align 3 thin washer shims so I'm still trying to find some thicker ones.

Oops, sorry about that...disregard my post. For some reason I was thinking shim spacer size in my reply.

BTW, if you're not able to find a .045" shim and have to use the trio of .015" shims, use this stuff to hold them together: EZ Turn Lubricant | Aircraft Spruce

It also works well as an anti-seize and thread lubricant and has many other uses.

I went to ace hardware and got some grade 8 washers. Nice quality and I think they were .050-.055 if I remember correctly.
You can always have a machine shop make you exactly what you need.
