406 sbc RFD 18 degree heads cam 269 281 @.050 450 worth of nitrous pistons .020 in the hole . So here is the question .040 head gasket or .053 ?

.040 = .060 quench 13.02 compression
.053 = .073 quench 12.53 compression

Me personally, I would go with the .040 gasket and 13.02 c/r. Be interesting to see what some others have to say.

i`d go with the thicker gasket and not worry about that half a point of compression, its not gonna be worth hardly any power on the hose

I would go thicker.More of a tuning window and I don't think you will loose much.

Dont mean to highjack but this concerns me because I am zero deck and need to run a thick gasket plus I'm running a merlin II block that dont have the extra lifter valley bolts. Any truth to this?

I know I have read Monte say he prefers .040 in the hole and a .040 gasket so I need to go with at least a .073 cometic.

.063 cometics on mine.

I would put a .060 gasket on it, because I like around .080 on the quench. The point of compression loss, will be a non factor on the gas.

If .080" quench would be ideal, what about compression? Is 14:1 with .080" quench ok or should a nitrous engine be conservative with compression also?

not sure about that thick but .051 seems very common.i would think it would be good as long as everything is flat.
