Blanket/Shield/Ugly ass cover...whatever?

Okay, I'm starting this thread to pick up where the other one left off in another section of YB. Since (unfortunately) I just found out that my JW ultrabell isn't good enough, and I still need some other ugly, gawdy ass "shield" of sorts-- can someone please provide a link to the actual rule on this?? Originally my trans guy told me I wouldn't need anything for my TH400 because TH400 don't "explode like that"-- but based on the photos provided...he's wrong, and I want something to shove down his throat now, and have him explain to me WHY he said what he said.
Any help? Thanks!

Who said that the JW isn't good enough and you'll need more?
The SFI cases are intended to take the place of Flex Plate Shields, Trans Case Shields/Blankets etc; so nothing else is needed.
According to others on a different thread, the ultra bell only serves as a flexplate/converter safty device... The remainder of the case still needs a cover/shield/blanket too. And I also just check this on NHRA.com, and it's listed under "Drivetrain section 2.4"
Ahhhh! I thought you had the whole SFI Case & Bell....Sorry about that, yes than you would need a blanket or shield to cover the "planetary" case in the event of an explosion. We just spent $3000.00 on our Glide and it's all inside a full SFI Case so you don't need any of that other stuff and in my eyes it was well worth it. I always hated having to try and fit a flex plate shield & blanket on our car because we had NO room at all between our floor board & trans.
If I would have know, I wouldnt' have bought a Ultra Bell, & would have just bought the CSR shield instead. Oh well. I guess I'll have to street race more, until I have enough for the shield too. (if it even fits over an ultra bell)

the rules are there for you to read ;) why did you think they sold a flwx plate shield and a blanket or cover ? Did you think we liked putting extra crap on a car that we try to lighten, and also think its fun to try to cram this carp in with even less space., all for fun :p
Well....live an learn I suppose. I was taking my trans guy's word, since he told me that based on the design of the TH400, it doesn't explode like a 727 does. Uggg...this sucks. If I would have known, I wouldn't have wasted $200 on an ultra bell, and would have just put that toward a CSR Super Shield.

.

You are still ahead if you ask me. Those bells are much stronger & forgiving.
You are money ahead in strength & reliability.

Don't have regrets on the ultrabell , stock cases crack all the time and flexplate shields are a huge pain.
Get a main case shield and bolt it on. If you have no room for it , get a blanket and fabricate bracketry to keep the blanket off the linkage and transbrake solenoid and you all set.
It all there for your own good, don't get pissed about having to have it.

Now go educate your trans guy , be nice.:p

Hutch
The CSR shield will fit over the ultra bell, i have one fitted to mine. As hutch said the ultra bell is a worthwile investment as the standard cases break all to often i found out the hard way :(
Thanks guys!

Hutch,

Do you (or anyone else out there) have any pictures of the "bracketry" to shield the solenoid and linkage? I have the blanket in place over my T400 but am having a creative block when thinking of something to shield these things.

Thanks,
Chris

Picture a piece of 3/8" tubing coming from a steel bushing you make that is held on with one the pan bolts (longer) The steel tubing is welded to the side of the bushing and comes out wider than the trans pan , down the length of the trans then back in at the rear to a similar bushing. Now the blanket has to go over the top of the trans , around the tubing which would hold the blanket off the linkage , solenoid etc then under the trans.

Does that make any sense?

Hutch
Ahhhhh, that makes sense. I'm not sure I have enough moly on the shelf, but as soon as I whip the parts up I will post a pic.

Thanks,
Chris
Flat strap can be used as well - this pic stolen from blon385's thread over on theturboforums:

He was doing it more so for heat, but went from pan rail to pan rail, around the trans.

That looks familiar :smt017 Great job.

You give a good internet description :D

Any suggestions on how in the heck I can attach the straps with the buckles tight against the trans tunnel? Is it super important to have the forward straps bolted to the bell? If not, I could take them off and rotate the blanket till the buckles are low enough to reach.

Chris

.

I ran the blanket for years in my stock bodied Camaro. I had to attach the front.
It would slip on my 400 & get into stuff it shouldn't.
Yes, the straps & buckles were a pain in the butt.

.
Is there any thing that will fit under a stock floor pan available ?
Tried a Tci shield no go. Looked at the CSR shield but will it clear a Ultra bell ? Bought a blanket, got it in but can't buckle the bottom straps. The linkage and cable bracket put the blanket right against the header. I like the idea in post #16 to clear the linkage but I have no room. I assume if you cut a hole in the blanket it would be no good cert wise. Any other thoughts? Maybe a flack jacket under the carpet ?
I can get pics tomorrow.
