I would do it using an iron alloy.. or maybe even a steel... and perminantly fasten them to the mains, and remachine the main bores, and put steel caps on the block that will fit the bearing size without the spacers...

Gary.... been thinking about this again. I think it would be best to make the main bore sleeves out of steel... this would aid in allowing the hone operation to remove equal material from both sides instead of having a soft iron, and a hard steel.
