Looks to me like the crank is flexing? GM crate 502 that I put in 20 years ago (my first new engine). Ran 15 miles back and forth to the track, a couple cruise nights and 30-40 hits, the fastest being [email protected] on a 250 shot Of nitrous. Just took it apart for the first time, and evaluating the rotating assembly. putting twins on it now. What do these bearings tell you?

and one rod: don’t remember but I think #2

Car has been in storage 20 years. Just took the engine out for the first time, and first time the short block has ever been apart.

How does the crank and rods look? If the look good I'd just measure the clearances and pop in new bearings.

I would check if your crank is slightly bent. I had similar issue and found that the crank was slightly bent .0015-.002. I sent it to Mile High and he took care of the crank.

Crank looks good but will check for straightness. Didn’t do that yet. Didn’t measure rods yet but that’s next also. If I find issues with either of these I’ll step up to a new rotating assembly. But would prefer to run these if I can. The bearings just concerned me a little, as the engine doesn’t have much run time. Although I was shifting at 6400 and going thru the lights at maybe 6800. Maybe too much for these rods.

Checked the crank today and it is straight. Using a 0.0001” there was no movement on any of the journals.

Measured the main bores. Using the .001” extra clearance shell thickness stated in the ACL catalog, I get .0024-.0025” clearance on the front four caps, and .0036” on the rear main. Is that too tight for the front 4? Should I use 1/2 std shell on the rear to get .0031” rear main clearance?
