I saw my orthopedic surgeon the other day due to the pain I was experiencing in my ankle. All the ankle injuries over the years of sports and stuff have finally caught up with me thanks to severe arthritis.

After a Cortisone shot and looking at the x-rays he said there is not much that can be done due to the years of wear and tear. He referred me to see an ankle specialist to review my case and consider my options.

It does not look good since just walking around the house hurts. In the past with other injuries once I got the Cortisone shot I could actually forget that I was injured. Not this time....it never stopped hurting just dulled the pain enough so now I can move around without having my breath taken away.

I was told I need either fusion or total replacement but was advised against the replacement due to my age.

I got a plate and screws but the rest of the mess is all factory equipment...I feel your pain brotha

I too have severe pain and crunching in my ankles when I walk...almost daily and I am 38 years old. Just had x rays and my arthritis has made a mess out of the bones. The tech that took the xrays was like OMG, wow....I feel your pain.just looking at this. I have never heard of a ankle replacement.

2009 is when the fda approved the total ankle systems,granted they offer more signifigant range of motion over the total ankle fusion,but the time span of the implant is whats at risk,mainly because its weight bearing. In my 10 years of working with orthopedic surgeons i have only one that will attempt a total ankle and thats with the star system from small bone innovations,its a risky surgery that requires precise cutting of the joint to make sure that your anatomical fuction of your foot is worthwhile.

i know there is one system in the works that gives great hope for total ankle replacement,but its in peliminary testing

my best friends father had ankle fusion last summer he said he wish he had it done long time ago hurts very very little now operation was done at duke hospital hope this will help you

My ankle after a little mishap this past Monday morning. I was stepping down off of my truck, stepped on the edge of pavement where it meets the ground, and turned it pretty bad. Probably should have went to the Dr but I didn't. Hopefully nothing was broken or fractured. The clutch in the Kenworth was pretty rough on it Tuesday morning!!!

have you tried chiropractor ? They wanted to do surgery on my moms shoulder from a fall years ago and she went to a chiropractor and she has no more pain and they were able to get her shoulder working well again. Surgery would be a last resort for me.

Around ten years ago I broke my Talus four wheeling in the sand dunes. My foot was only holding on by a few mussels and the skin on the inside. they put me back together with some screws and stitches. I have never had it fused, and there are some days I have to crawl to the throne. I have a friend that broke the same bone and had if fused. We both limb about the same some days. I really love the days it doesn't hurt and i can somewhat walk normal. I have been hoping for something to come along with modern tech. so i could walk normal but I really don't think it will happen in my day. So i do feel your pain. I have been told that one surgery would be taken a piece out of my leg and replacing it but have always been told that it is only if something goes very wrong. I have been told by the docs. that i'm very lucky to still have my foot and walking. It has been something I have learnd to just live with and when im in pain take alot of pills.

Problem is those pills are hard as hell on the liver and kidneys.

I guess i'm kind of lucky then. My worst day is tuesday. not on it much over the weekend then hard and heavy on Monday then that night and tuesday I have problems. Not all the time but a lot. so I am only taking pills on tuesday and sometimes wednesday. but it also varies on what i'm doing also. Wish i didn't have to live with it but from what i'm told it is better than the surgery.

I'm glad that stuff worked for your mom but in reality chiropractors are essentially masseuses that don't offer hand jobs. There is no scientific proof backing chiropracty as being benefitical. There is however a lot of evidence suggesting it can only be harmful. In this case, if your ankle is physically damaged enough that doctors are recommending replacement, having a chiropractor touch it in any way would be a terrible choice.

With the fusion what was the range of motion? The ankle that is bothering me is the "Go Pedal" foot.

There is however a lot of evidence suggesting it can only be harmful. In this case, if your ankle is physically damaged enough that doctors are recommending replacement, having a chiropractor touch it in any way would be a terrible choice.

Exactly the injuries we are discussing are "structural" / skeletal not tissue related. The way I felt Friday when I went to see my regular Ortho, I was gassed by the time I got to the waiting room fighting the pain.

Your injury sounds like mine...when I looked down my foot wasnt at the bottom of my leg...it was offset to one side and turned straight out...it was a long recovery but other then looking kind of odd compared to the other one it works

Brings back bad memories. sounds the same that is for sure. Do you have a lot of pain now or how is yours? I remember reaching down and felling the bones on the end of my leg, while my foot was to the side. I was never in pain while waiting for help, unless someone moved it.
