I have had 2 sets of 4.56's go bad 10-12 runs each pinnon &ring gear teeth cracked and laid over. To a point to can not turn the wheels by hand the 2nd set open backlash up to .018-.020 still did the same thing. I used to get 80 plus runs

Sounds like there may be a material issue going on. I know Rini said he broke a R&P at MIR but don't know what brand or how many runs.

I was just told at our shop that Richmond was bought by Motive Gear. They claimed it was even hard to get ahold of anyone at Richmond.

well this restores some faith in my gear instalation ability i run richmond and the last set i put in started growling at about 5 runs i thought i put them in wrong but in installed them just as i have the last 100 sets or so and it looks like the metal is just poor and kinda gaulding i was going to send them back to see if they could tell me what happend but if they are going south they will probably just give me line of bs so ill save the freight

I got 65 passes out of our last Motive 9.5" gears in 3.89 ratio before it stripped the teeth off the pinion. Proper setup has a ton to do with how long these things last although I can't speak for the Richmond brand pieces.

Yes the 10'' fits the ultra case . you will need to call strange and get the pinion support spacer kit then its a normal set up !

toms 10 all the way. he also build the most ultimate case also. look on u tube search toms billet third member videos. the 10 will work in in the ultra case. you will have to buy spacer from strange to place between pinion support and case. toms 10 in gear still measures 9.5 dia od. so it is no larger than a 9.5 it has a 10 in print gear cut on a 9.5 blank so the teeth are much wider. Which is why it requires a .250 in or so spacer between pinion support and case.

just put toms 10" behind my BAE motor-no probs so far-stuffed it in MWs 9" alum 3rd member-took some grindin but it went in-also took some mo grindin to get it in MWs 9" modular rear--but all worked-maybe 1/4" longer to driveshaft--had to do this to get 5.00 gear and 1480 shaft (sorry- this post almost sounds porno)

We were wondering the same...we've eaten 2 sets of gears in less 30 passes (9.5 Richmond ) last set was installed at MW. Not sure if we are exceeding limits of 9.5 gear ?

on both of of the 4.56's that failed after 3-4 runs the gears were very noisy when towing back

We've never bought a new gearset in 10 yrs running a blown promod.
richmond street gears went 7.50's at 3100lbs 100's of laps.
used richmond 9 inch 4.56 pro gear went 4 [email protected] for several seasons...traded for used 4.86 progear.
4.86 went 4.0 best about 40 [email protected].
This season bought a 9.5 4.56 out of a dragster. Setup weird and made noise on return road from day one .after 6 hits we inspected and it looked good.
8 more hits in the low 4's and knock on wood it's alive.
Toms deal is 1000.00. If we have any issues we'll put the 4.86 9 inch gears back in.
If a 3.50-3.60 car needs a 10 inch it's justified but there's no reason a 9.5 gearset can't live with a high 3 low 4 deal at reasonable weight. I'd bet they have the material screwed up.Probably got a smokin deal on some chinee steel.

Always wondered where they came up with the sizes. A 9 in gear measures 9" which seems normal. Measure a 9 1/2" gear, it's 9 1/4" and a 10" gear measures 9 1/2".
