I am trying to help out a friend. He has a stock 71 351C 4v. It all the sudden decided to chew up the dist. gear. He installed a new oil pump and dist. gear, just to have the new gear chewed up in less then 100 miles. I have not messed with too many clevland motors and before i go tear into this one i was looking for info. I don,t know if the 351C are like the 429/460's and need oiling mods to survive, but the fact that this motor is stock makes me think it's something else (cam walk, etc?)

What kind oil pump, stock or hi-volume?

either way, the camshaft gear is already shot, installing new distributor gear without replacing camshaft would destroy distributor gear less than xx miles.

It's a standard pump (no high volume) and the one that came out of it was stock as well. I guess i'll tell him to get a cam, timing chain and a new gear and we will go from there.
