Hello all,

I wanted to take a moment to introduce our company. We are Antigravity Lithium-Ion Batteries and have recently signed on as Sponsors.

Lithium-Ion is fast becoming a great alternative to the heavier, less powerful Lead/Acid and AGM Starter Battery. With Lithium Battery technology there is often misinformation and questions regarding lithium batteries in Cars, specifically those using 16v systems.

We encourage you to ask any questions about Lithium-Ion, how our products compare to competitors in the market, about the use and safety of lithium-equipped products.
The goal of this post is to educate those who would be interested in factual information.

We can start it off with the Benefits of Lithium:

The general benefits of Lithium Starting Batteries (depending on the quality/brand) are,

1- They can weigh up to 70% less than a similar size Lead/Acid battery and that can save about 30 to 50 lbs (depending on the vehicle's battery size). This is absolutely the most cost-effective means of weight reduction on the Market. For example, our Antigravity Batteries H6/Group 48 30Ah Lithium-Ion battery weighs 13.9 pounds and is roughly 33 lbs lighter than the H6/Group 48 battery found in most Challengers, Ram Trucks, Camraros, 911s, BMW's, etc. To lose 35 lbs of weight using Carbon Fiber, Titanium, or other exotic materials can be extremely costly. The quality exhaust systems on the market run thousands of dollars to lose a mere 15 pounds. Our Lithium Battery is a fraction of those costs. In Drag Racing/Performance/Race Cars this equates to shorter braking distances, better acceleration, and better handling… these are features that dramatic weight loss will achieve.

2- Lithium-Ion can offer significantly higher Cranking Power than Lead/Acid. In our Direct fit Automotive Lithium batteries, this means almost twice the cranking power. Offering a higher more consistent voltage at start-up is kept as well. This means a better start due to the increased speed of the starter and less voltage drop. Additionally, you can use even a smaller battery with some applications in Drag Racing, Performance, Race, Street Cars and still easily start the Car.

3- The life cycle of a Lithium Battery can be 2-3 times that of Lead/Acid and AGM batteries. Lithium Cells (depending on quality) are rated at 2000-2500 cycles. Lead/Acid is rated at 1000 cycles. Additionally, a product like our H6/Group 48 Automotive Battery has features built into the battery that protect it from the main causes that damage Lead/Acid Batteries such as over-discharge and overcharging. With our RE-START battery line they will put themselves to SLEEP if it notices it will soon be over-discharged, yet saves enough reserve energy to RE-START the Car. Simply press the RE-START button on top of the battery and start the car.

12 volt system... anything special needed...use standard alt?
Good morning Mike!

For standard alternator, generator, and stator charging systems there is no changes that are needed to be made to the majority of OEM Charging systems. A Standard alternator should put out a charge of roughly 13.8v-14.2v which is below the suggested maximum of 14.6v that list. With that said some on the new smart charging systems due have odd voltage regulation to increase fuel economy and due put more strain on the battery. Our Automotive Batteries have an Internal Battery Management System (aka BMS) that offers safety circuitry to prevent over-discharge / over-charge, including short-circuit protections, while additionally offering cell balancing and thermal protection.

Some cars do have alternate charging profiles for AGM and Lithium batteries. With that said it has mostly been seen in newer euros, some of them will have different charging profiles based on the battery type. This would involve checking the vehicle's owner's manual about battery replacement.

Charging with an outside battery charger or using a maintainer/ tender is different though. The Antigravity Lithium Battery operates and functions the same as any Lead/Acid Battery while in your vehicle, you should only use a Lithium, Lifepo4 12.8v Charger/Maintainer rather than a Lead/Acid type. (We recommend the CTEK and Optimate brand lithium battery chargers.) Traditional Lead/Acid Chargers will damage lithium batteries due to their different charging characteristics that are built into their charging profiles, such as a “De-Sulphate Mode” which is not intended for use on Lithium Batteries. (it can potential turn your battery into a brick).

Please use only a Lithium-Specific Charger/Maintainer designed for 12.8v Lifepo4 Lithium-Ion Batteries and not exceeding a 20 Amp Charge rate, or above 14.4v when charging. This will protect and ensure the long lifespan of your lithium battery.
