A friend of mine just rebuilt his 727, it drove fine for about 8 miles, shifting up and down ok but then the rear (reverse) band seems to apply while in 3rd and drags the engine down. He stripped it down and the rear band is worn right down to the metal and the drum is badly scored, this has happened twice and he can't find an obvious fault, I know nothing about 727's so said I would ask here, thanks.

Somehow there is a leak into the reverse servo bore.If the VB and case are not flat it can happen (crossleak at accumulator bore to reverse servo feed hole) or if he used a shift kit and did not install it properly (manual valve installation) there will be a problem with the manual valve venting while in drive position which in turn will apply the band while driving down the road.
