I was told launching a 727 in 2nd gear could possibly rough on the clutches....is this true?

Not possible you left in second gear you did not shift to second gear.
Okay now you leave in first gear run it to max. rpm's, and shift to
second gear then third, yes that is hard on clutches and or bands.

Step back and look at this and you understand.

In someways it wounded like it made since, 1st gear the drive shaft would spin easier due to the gear ratio (not as much load?) 2nd gear I could apply mower motor power to have the same amount of torque on the tires making more load on the clutches to hold it. I will give it a try tomorrow
Thanks

I remember yrs. back talking to guy in the pits and he ask what I had for a transmission
told him it was a 350TH w/4000 stall converter, he said why would you do that the clutches
aren't going to last long slipping like that.

I have wondered this for my 904 as well if leaving in 2nd gear will hurt it. I am going to be spraying soon and am thinking if first gear is too much ratio, I might try launching from second.

Grinner does make a brake to launch in 2nd for the 727. I just got my car together and wanted to make some passes while debating on tossing a lot more money into this trans it to make it live. After calling around to some trans shops I think I will pull this trans out and sell it while it's still fine and order a power glide this week instead

We run a 2nd gear start Grinder valve body in our car with no problems. We hit it with 500 shot off line 2850# door car 7.70 @174
Trans was built by Keith Long aka 727 Specialist call him he builds the 2nd gear start valve bodies at Grinder

Video of best pass 7.63 @177

That's cool, how long have you been running it? I talked with Keith, he said there was no advantages to running the 727. I called around to a few performance trans shops last week, not a one responded the 727 was best for my application. I'm making about 1700-1800hp now and looking to crank it up more next year.

Have about 5 years on it, 1 of first designs when they started making them.
I think around 1500/1600 hp is the limit with a 727.
You should think about a ATI glide then you'll be good to 2000 + hp
if you are making 1700/1800 hp now and want to turn it up more.
This is what we are planing to up grade down the road. Have 4 cars and alot of 727 stuff, hard to start over.
Good Luck JIM
