just wondering wut every 1 thinks about the 700-R4?? i am lookin to put more gear in my car but i still wanna keep it 100% streetable. i am young so i cant afford all of the gas that it would gussel if i put a three speed in it. i am looking to be able to drive to my not so local drag strip and make 10 runs and still be able to drive it home on the same tank of gas. i was thinking about putting in the 700-R4 with either a 3.73 or a 4.10 (note i am planing on using the 7.5 10bolt so 3.90's are not a option) with a 27"-28" tall tire. also i am running a 305 that will hopefully be getting a 100-125 shot of nitrous. so knowing all that info will that tranny be good/strong enough if i build it up and also what converter would u suggest i use (i found that my happy spot right now with the 2.73 gears is around 2200-2500 rpm). if u can help me Hutch this would be greatly apprechiated

thanks
mike

I think the gear selection you are thinking of is alittle stiff. I would consider a 3.23 or 3.42.Since the first gear ratio is 3.07 it will give you alot of reduction in first.

There are some ups & downs to 700R4s

One of the down falls to the 700R4s in my opinion is the ratio change from 1st to 2nd. It is quite a spread.

I build alot of these for street/race applications w/great luck

I also build alot of 2004Rs for street/race w/great success. They have better ratio splits than the 700R4s do.

Good Luck
2004R

The gear splits on a 2004R are this.

1st - 2.74
2nd - 1.57
3rd - 1.00
4th - 0.67

The durability of a 2004R is very good & can take some pretty good power

Also w/the lock up torque converter you have the option of a stall speed & can use the lock up to cruise. This will give you the best of both worlds.

The only thing to worry about is the T.V. (throttle valve) cable, which must be hooked up.This is what controls line pressure instead of a modulator.

The best cores to start w/are 85' to 90'

Good Luck
