we'll i tore down my 406 and did a cam change . engine ran good but almost everyone agreed the cam was to much so i changed it . now i was running a stock victor jr that did not match the heads well so with my engine should i do a good port match to my victor jr or swap to a different intake. this engine is in my 68 chevelle street /strip car. it will be running full weight ,3"flowmasters,5000 stall, 3.90 gear,6600-6700 rpm max

406
stock block
eagle crank and 6.00 rods.
probe flat top pistons(10.8 to 1)
stock unported brodix track 1 215cc heads.
comp solid roller 252/258 at .050,630/630 lift 106 lc installed at 104 ilc
stock victor jr intake, 750 to 850 holley.
1 3/4 headers

the engine ran 11.16 at 123 in my camaro with only 2 changes one the camaro ran 1 7/8 headers and the cam was a 276 282 at .050 640/640 lift. im looking to run as fast or faster with the new cam in my chevelle the cars should weigh very close to the same. thanks.

Jus lookin @ your rear gear I'd say you could use a set of 456's I'm sure your leaving some on the table with a 390 gear .It can't be goin threw the eye's at your max rpm .And to answer your question ya I'd port match the intake and give it a true trial .

No way with a short tire and a 2.48 low gear, if he changes the rear gear it will ET and MPH the same.

What we have found is you cant stick enough rear gear in a street car to lock the converter up so you might as well ride the converter in high. We have changed from a 4.10 t oa 4.71 and not seen a difference in anything ET or MPH with a car that is dead hooked on both gears

im sure a 3.90 gear will not get me thru at max rpm id say around 6100 but its where im going to start so its driveable i might go to a 4.10.

Jeff sound more like the converter isn't working for you if you can't see a difference .When I just change tire height I notice a difference .I've also seen Jay's Nova change as much as two tenths because of a difference between 28 and 29 tall tires
