302 "Mexican" block limitations

17022 Views 35 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  allend43
I have a 302 based engine. It is a mexican block. I have a main girdle on it and forged internals. I know of the limitations of a stock standard 302 block but whats the limit with this combination? I was wanting to run 8.5 limited and already knew I was taking a knife to a gunfight but If I can keep from scattering parts everywhere that would be great. The engine dynoed at 640hp before the heads were ported so is it tapped out or can I spray a little bit? Thanks for any help.

As I understand, their limit even with a girdle and forged internals is 550hp. Even at 520hp, I have seen them eventually split in half after two seasons.
what i was told a while back is the mexican block is about as strong as the 351w stock blocks.
I'm gettin mixed opinions around here too. I have a descent car. Hate to gut it just to make a showing.
It will hold a little more. But when it goes it will go big. RPM is the big killer with em.

Guess I'll try her out and diaper it up.

This ^^^

I am a die hard 8.2" Deck guy. If I was going to build one for the Ky. limited series, I would be searching hell and high water for a boss 302 block. The one with the 4 bolt mains.

Best of luck with the "El Hecho"
BUY A NEW BOSS BLOCK ....... DON'T WASTE ALL UR internal or your car..When I bottom END COMES OUT OF THE BLOCK AN OIL'S DOWN THE TRACK ...just my opinion .
I"ve said it time and time again, it all depends on how many mexicans you can squeeze in there. Is it an illegal block or does it have papers??

Illegal. Can not run any aftermarket block be it Ford or Chevy. It has to be a passenger car or truck block. A boss block is just an aftermarket block made by the factory just like the bow tie blocks are.
Build a 351 and be done. Or BB.
or give the 8.2 way less weigth than 3150lbs and were talking 2800 or lower...Were talking about where they can have a chance to compete against 351w or SBC,BBF,and BBC without killing the block.I too like to use what I already have laying around in the house.

p.s. I do think diaper need to be in the rule too.

At 640 + HP and that block you will have "rod windows" very quickly.
After you get the "rod windows" all you will need is a scoop shovel and a 55 galllon drum to clean up the big mess.
PS. Don't forget a good supply of kitty litter.:)
The whole Mexican block thing is like calling one retard smarter than the other retard. I completely understand budget concerns but It's painful to keep seeing this come up over and over on the internet.
G
It has slightly better caps..and no advantages over any other stock block.
I disagree, the illegal ones are much stronger than the legal ones!!:p
Some of the longevity issues depend on the machine work, how the engine is mounted, the tune and so on. Some people can break cannonballs with wet spaghetti, others can screw some shit together that is near indestructible.
