i was coming home tonight. stopped to grab dinner. shortly after i started the truck it had a "service 4x4" message in the display. i haven't used the 4 wheel drive in a while.didn't touch the button tonight. the switch will not light up if you hit the button. just from looking online it seems like the switch is normally the cause. anyone have this happen. any other common issues. any help would be great. thanks

Did the same to me on my 04. It was the switch and took 5min to replace.

Most of the time if the switch doesn't light, it is bad. Encoder motor sensor could be bad too, but typically it will have different symptoms.

my 03 SIERRA has the shifter and im glad..screw that elect. crap

Its a 5 min job and cost 25 dollars. Pop the bezel out and unclip the switch. Install a used one . Ready to go.

Last one I looked at had a code for open circuit in encoder, not cheap to replace. Hopefully just a switch.

ill get a switch from the dealer tomorrow. hopefully thats it.
